  1. Ok, Im having trouble converting a movie from MKV to mp4. Everytime I try, the PS3 reads data corrupt...

I have a sample of the file, if I link to rapidshare with the file, you can see what I mean.

Anyways, I have tried xvid4psp, mkv2vob, gotsent and megui. I simply cannot get this thing converted!

I have read all the guides and it's not working, I can't for the life of me figure out why. Once I got the video to work, but the audio wouldnt come in 5.1 (which it has). but now, I can't flippin rember what I did to get the video to work! I am has getting frustrating!

Why are you converting to .mp4 if all you're doing is streaming?
Just save as .mpg or .vob with MKV2VOB......
If it's still won't stream, then demux with MKVextractGui >set"change level 5.1 to 4.1",if that's what original is...mux new h.264 and audio with tsMuxer, save as .m2ts, change file extension to .mpg or .vob and stream...I use TVersity..

That doesn't always work though ... I tried it with a Profile 5.1 file and although I changed it to 4.1 it would not work. I think that "trick" only works depending on other factors like the number of ref. frames etc.

    @tsantsa
You say you can't get it converted and listed several programs like XviD4PSP and MeGui etc. so I guess my questions is this: are you actually re-encoding the video / audio or just trying to re-mux without encoding or what?

I downloaded the sample but I'm using XviD4PSP right now and with my slow ass computer it won't be done encoding until some time tomorrow so when I get home from work Monday night (around 10:00pm EST) I'll take a look at it and see what I can do ... or not do ... with that sample.

I've actually successfully converted and streamed Level 5.1 with up to 16 Ref Frames when processing with MKV2VOB> to .vob or .mpg...Still think he should try at least a sample before going through converting to .mp4.
Having said that, you're correct in stating that not all have worked....I'm going to try with OP's sample and let you know..
    Cheers!

FYI ,the sample clip provided by the OP,streamed perfectly to PS3 when processing through MKV2VOB > .vob.......

FWIW, ran the sample through XviD4PSP and used Format MPEG2 NTSC, MPEG2 HQ Ultra video encoding.and resulting .mpg streamed to PS3 as well....

  10. first of all, thanks for the help!

i will try the 2 methods tonee mentioned when i get home from work this evening.

my goal is to simply get them to stream correctly to either 360 or ps3. i dont want to reconvert if i dont have to, but will if i must.

tonee, did u get all 6 channels of audio to work? the one time it got the vid to work, the audio only had 2 audio channels for some reason!

Yes I got 6 ch. but I stream to the PS3 as I believe the Xbox only plays .mp4 with 2 ch AAC audio...I use mkv2VOB > .vob or .mpg, I don't convert to .mp4 output with mkv2vob...I use XviD4PSP or Megui for .mp4 conversions..
Here's the mediaInfo after processing your sample clip....

  12. i have an interesting problem which may or may not have anything to do with my streaming problem. I have used mkv2vob to change the sample to vob and mpg and mp4 with both mpeg and x264 codecs (trial before I check to see if it can stream or not) and have found that each one of these files has audio BUT it has NO DIALOG. WTF?

How in the...what did i do?

Any help here before I pull my hair out?

Maybe you need to check the audio settings on the PS3..
Do all formats play properly on PC?

  14. No, no, that was on my PC! I just checked on ps3. 2 of the 5 files I made work. An mpeg 2 and an mp4. I don't know if those are the mpg extentions or vob, or even which codec versions. (havent checked, Im upstairs eatin dinner!)

The wierd thing: The sound worked just fine on the ps3! I don't get it. Gotta be an audio setting somewhere. On vlcplayer and wmp im getting this wierd playback issue.

Sounds like you have the audio channels mixed up. That is the original center channel is no longer in the center.

Man I need a new computer ... I started encoding a 1280x720 project yesterday in XviD4PSP ... I don't remember exactly but I think I started it around 5pm or so Sunday ... it is now 9:45pm Monday and the second pass is only 63% done (it is a 2 pass PS3 MP4 encode).

I had enough money to buy a new computer about a month ago and then all these f'ing bills came up and now I'll be lucky to get a new one by the end of the year.

    F'ing H264/x264 codec

Hey Fulci, my PC specs aren't much better, which is why I avoid converting to .mp4 ,unless it's absolutely necessary......I can't wait to build a new rig....

I finally got around to playing with the sample. Basically I loaded it into XVID4PSP and made a 2 channel (downmixed to Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound) AAC-LC MP4 using the PS3/XBOBX 360 profile. Played perfect on my PS3.

I didn't have to do much as the MKV loaded without issues ... the audio was correctly recognized etc.

It did take about 40 minutes to convert the clip on my computer. I used the x264 Ultra Constant Quality with a Quantizer of 16 ... again it looked super and sounded fine on my regular two channel stereo receiver.

If only a whole movie encode in 40 minutes LOL

  21. Well, gentlemen, thank you for your help.

I have it all working now. I really can't for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong! I had to have had some setting incorrect or something somewhere...

    I am, admittedly, stoopad.

EDIT: Ok how do I add chapter points to the resulting VOB from mkv2vob? The ps3 doesn't automate chapters like th 360 does, so this is a minor annoyance.
