  1. Hello:
I have a video on computer. Within its folder are IFO, MPEG, BUP files. I would like to open the video and explore and capture stills. Do I need a special software?

Most software video players should be able to do that. A BUP is a backup of a IFO and a IFO is the index, menus, etc., so you probably want to capture pictures from the VOBs. I'm not sure what a MPEG is doing in there, but you could capture from it also. If that really is a DVD, you might look to the upper left on this page for 'WHAT IS' DVD for a explanation of those DVD parts.

One player that will work for about any format is VLC media player. It can play back VOBs and capture stills. Media Player Classic might be another to use. And VirtualDub Mod will also work for VOBs or MPEGs, besides capturing short scenes if wanted.

EDIT: I forgot with VLC you have to change some settings for snapshots. I would try VDMod or MPC as they may be a bit simpler.

    And welcome to our forums.

  3. Hi again:
I have tried several media/video software, and it is always the same. I can call up the video, stop it where the stillis and it won't save the image. I go through the options selecting everything without a star and it always says, "cannot save the image", with an error number. So I just tried all the ones you suggested and the same thing. I had hope for the Media Player Classic, but alas...

Pay options include powerdvd and windvd. Both have snapshot features and you can load vob files into the player.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

That's just not true. Double-click the VOB (if MPC is your default player, as it is mine), or otherwise get it to open a VOB (not the DVD). Go to the place you want to capture. Go File->Save Image, and you can save it as JPG or BMP.

However, it's going to save it as a 720x480/576 image, and not resized for playback.

  6. I do not have a VOB. I have a BUP, IFO and MPEG, as I stated. I am using the IFO. I did the steps you suggest. "I don't get the That's not true" part, but I do appreciate you help.

Ok is it a .mpg file or .dat file? It sounds like you might have a vcd file even though you have bup and ifo files. there is a mpeg folder in a vcd structure.

But you should still be able to capture an image off of it regardless of the format.

You might be able to do it in virtualdubmod or virtualdubmpeg2. Open the video file in virtualdub and then click file-save image sequence. It has been awhile since i tried that and I can't remember if you can do single frames of your choice or not or what file type it will be in. Worth a try and virtualdub is free.

Yeah, in VDubMod, if you can open it scroll to the frame you want to capture and then go Video->Snapshot Source Frame and you can choose to save it in BMP, TGA or PNG formats.

Except for the fact that IFOs and BUPs go with DVD video files which also contain VOB files, and not MPEGs. Maybe someone renamed them. I don't know as I don't download crap from the Internet made by idiots. But even MPEGs can be opened and the pics saved using Media Player Classic, so I don't know what the problem is. Maybe yoda313 is on the right track.

  9. Hi Manono:
I didn't get this from the internet. It is not "crap" It is my own video. I had it on DV tape and got it transferred to a DVD. Thank you for your help though. I will try your suggestions as well as yoda313
