I'm nostalgic for the old Windows 3.1 desktop. One of nice features of 3.1 was that you could create boxes to group your programs in. You could for example put all your DVD or financial apps in one box. You could move those boxes around the desktop at will. I really miss that feature.

  2. You can still do that in any Windows version
Create a folder on your desk top and call it what you want
Change the icon to what ecer you want
Drag any shortcut into the folder that you want

or drag any shortcut folder from your start menu to your desktop

How do you expand a new folder to include many icons to remain on the desktop?

  4. It's an explorer window so you can resize it to you want

The only thing is, if you click on the quick launch icon for the desktop, it'll get minimized

I know what you're getting at though

I can remember if it was 98 or NT, but you could revert back to the old 3.x style by editing the system.ini and changing the shell.
There is also a program out there that'll change your XP shell to 3.x
