I have been burning dvd's for several years now but have noticed sometimes when I burn a dvd and then try to make a copy of the dvd already burned it fails, other time it will work. Usually when I buy 100 dvd-rs about 80% of them come out fine and the others fail during the burning process. Why is this? It's not the media I use because I use taiyo yuden and verbatim.

How old is your burner? What model and brand? I've used TY and Verbs for several years on probably 5 different burners and out of several hundred discs I may have had one or two failures. And that was more likely my fault than the burner.

Also, what program are you burning them with and what type of failure did you have? Unreadable or skips? Problem during the read or the burn? It occasionally happens that a burner is not able to read a disc it created.

And how are you copying the DVD? Rip it to your hard drive, then burn from that? Or on the fly?

You should have much better than a 80% success rate. BTW, even TY and Verbatim don't work perfectly with all burners. There seem to be a rare few that don't get along with those brands.

My burner is about a year old. It's a Sony AW-G170A. I've tried nero burning rom, vso copy to dvd, satiera, dvd shrink. Sometime if one doesn't work another will but I have gotten errors several times from all. I Rip it to my hard drive, then burn from that. here's the log from a file I burned a few hours ago.

I've had Nero choke on Verbatims and TYs in the past. That's why I ditched it for ImgBurn. Nary a problem after that.

Nothing obvious in that log. This line is a write error where the address was incorrect, but doesn't seem to be a fatal error.
6/16/2008 1:16:34 PM error Write error at 384416 (16) - Code 05 21 02 [Illegal request, Invalid address for Write]

But I did notice this line:

    6/16/2008 1:13:33 PM info Writing device used : 0:0:0 - SONY DVD RW AW-Q170A 1.70 [J] (Usb)

It this an external burner? If so, that may relate to the first error.

I have a Sony 170A around here somewhere, but never noticed any problems with TY media or burning.
BTW, Shrink has no burning program. It uses DVD Decrypter, or probably Nero, in your case.

I would try ImgBurn instead, and if you have a problem, post one of those logs.

Could be a slow system, and there are several things that might help...
    --do a system maintenance
--kill all unnecessary software and processes
--burn from the main master internal drive, rather than from slave or external drives
    --burn at a slower speed

Or it could be a dirty drive or environment. Blow it out with compressed air. Get a HEPA air purifier to clean your environmental air. Wear a hairnet if you have dandruff... No kidding! A tiny piece of junk (dust, dandruff, bug, or whatever) on the disc surface can kill a burn. Presumably you avoid fingerprints(?).

If it's an IDE drive in an external enclosure, it could be a bad USB interface in the external enclosure. Other than that: The RAM was a little on the light side if reported correctly (512MB), and if there is something trying to access the RAM during the burn......

  8. I would second classfour's reply, on both points. The RAM seems a little short for DVD burning, *especially* with an external USB enclosure. In my experience with an assortment of PCs, both Windows XP Pro and Macintosh OSX, external USB burners are much more finicky than internal drives and give me a much higher coaster rate, about the 20% loss that you report. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the failures, the USB burner will just randomly blink and blow the burn. USB2 is OK for hard drives and other types of hardware but does seem to have trouble with DVD burning (just as the earlier USB1 CD burners were troublesome). There's just something about optical media burning that USB chokes on, which is a real PITA for some laptop and Apple users who can't install internal IDE or SATA burners.

Hi, My dvd burner is external. I just tried a burn with imgburn and vso copytodvd and here are both logfiles. oh, I have another compuer that has more ram and several dvds have failed on that also. Do external burners have a lot of problems? would you suggest getting an internal?
for this logfile i verifiedit and it failed . whren i play in on my dvd player it play fine until the last 2 minutes.
