usually_quiet writes, "There are also two flags in the IFO which could be disabled to prevent someone from turning on closed captions"

I've got a new DVD player (samsung) that refuses to stop displaying closed captions unless half a dozen buttons are pressed every time play or resume is pressed. They seem to be buried in the videos, at least DVDShrink doesn't show anything about them. Is there a way to get rid of them? (freeware and simple - I only use DVDDecryptor, ReJig and DVDShrink so far)

Assuming that the subtitles are NOT burned in, you have 2 ways to get rip of them.

    1) Here's a guide for forcing subtitles ON:

I've done this and it works. You should be able to read this and figure out how to force them OFF using this method. The downside is that there is some possibility that a DVD player may refuse to honor the flag forcing them off and display them anyway.
    2) You could rip the DVD and using DVDShrink remove the subs before it authors the DVD. If the subs aren't there, they can't be displayed.

Closed captions? Don't you mean Subtitles? It is the TV that decides whether or not to display closed captions. The DVD play decides whether or not to display subtitles.

I think SLK001 has identified the source of my problem. Text that appears at the bottom of the
screen for the hearing impaired is definitely called closed captioning in Canada. My DVD player
has an option to turn off "subtitles", and it didn't affect the closed captioning; my TV set doesn't
have any options, it just shows whatever it gets from the DVD player.

    Anyway, 2Cool's method
    http://download.videohelp.com/r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/2cool/subtitles/subtitles_off_d...lt_pgcedit.htm
works. Many thanks all. Gee, it's nice to be able to just put a DVD into the player and watch it,
without being forced to push 15 buttons first.
