Hey guys! The question is in the subject. The reason I want another program is because I'm using WMM2.6 and the rest speaks for itself. So hope you come with good suggestions.

OK, you've given us your budget, how much are you willing to "invest" in learning? What types of videos do you plan to work as sources? What is your destination? Are you under strict deadlines or can you take your time (and hopefully increase quality)? When you say "movie-editing program" do you actually mean an editor, or do you expect the "editor" to encode, author, burn and make your morning coffee?

IMO the best free video editor is AviSynth, coupled with VirtualDub to view/test the scripts, it offers the most flexibility and capabilities, is still in active production and is actively supported by a vast user group.

I make tutorials and in-game movies just for fun. I don't really care about how much of my time it takes. I like to experiment. But I'd like if it's not to difficult to use. And it's just for YouTube and other stuff like that so no burning. And I tried VirtualDub but it does'nt really seem to work... Could it be because I'm using Vista?

No. Virtualdub works perfectly well under Vista. So does AVI Demux. These are not what I would call 'Advanced Editors', but then neither is Avisynth. They are certainly important tools, and can be used for simple assemble edit tasks and simple to advanced video processing. I don't know of any Non-Linear Editors (NLEs) that work under windows, and even though WMM is not a great editor, is it non-linear and therefore more flexible than the likes of virtualdub when it comes to arranging video.

You may have to bite the bullet and look at the likes of Ulead VideoStudio, Vegas Movie Studio or Premiere Elements if you want a step up from WMM.

We've gotten pretty spoiled by those generous people who have devoted time and energy toward the development of the free applications we enjoy. But there is a limit. "Advanced" non-linear editors evidently take months to develop, and without any reward for the labor, what would be the point? Freebies are wonderful, and this site has led us all to many great software programs that the developers had every right to charge for. We are very fortunate! But let's not take it all for granted and start expecting all complex software programs to be free.

Maybe not 'Advanced', but look into Cuttermaran, or Mpeg2Schnitt, both freeware. But if you want transitions and other advanced operations, look into payware.

  8. well, the answer is not so simple since we do not know what you are going to do with the videos. For avi files, without conversion or titles etc. VirtualDub is really an advanced editor. If you think about a package helpful for making DVDs or alike then Videospin could be the choice. For making streaming videos I think Microsoft Media Encoder is the best.

Not all of ABC Video Rolls features seem to work with QuickTime versions later than 4. Also, requires registration to remove nag screens, but the site for registration is gone. Still my favorite editor
Wax or Zwei-Stien are pretty good too.

  12. Are you in the market for a DVD recorder for your computer? If so or if not, you may find that you can get some really nice video editing software for "free". I bought a pioneer drive a few years ago and got some Ulead code for free with it. I got Video Studio and MovieMaker so that I can mess with video and then author pretty DVDs. I really like the drive as well. I bought the Sony software and do not use it as I see too many artifacts in their filter code when doing panning and zooming of stills.
