what should be the format for burning files onto DVD so that I can watch them in DVD players.
I have some.DAT files that I need to burn.. And please suggest me some software using which conversions can be done easily and using which I can convert multiple file formats......

Extract the content of the dat files back to mpg using VCDGear, then use tmpgenc DVD author to author them to DVD. It will upsample the audio to 48kHz for DVD compliance, and leave the video as it.

dat files are probably from vcds and I would then try tmpgenc dvd author as it wont reconvert them if they are dvd compliant. If tmpgenc dvd author wont open the dat directly try vcdgear them to mpg first.
If you want free tools then try vcdgear the dat to mpg and then use all-in-one converters like dvd flick to convert the mpg to dvd.
