I have been having some issues with my Samsung HT-X40 entertainment system. It was not reading quite a few commercial movie disks. I found a firmware upgrade for the system. I followed all steps in the documentation. System shows correct upgraded firmware number. Problem is now it will not recognize any disk put in it.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

While it is possible that you botched the firmware upgrade somehow, it does seem that the player was going bad anyway prior to this and your current problems may have nothing to do with the firmware. Try cleaning the lens (do a web search on how to do this) and see if that helps. If not, you could try to find the previous version of the firmware prior to your upgrade and try installing that. If that fails to fix the problem, it's time either for a repair or a replacement.

One of the problems with this kind of system is that you now have a single point of failure that will render the entire system worthless. When (not if but WHEN) the DVD player goes bad (and it will eventually), it will make your entire system useless because the player is also the receiver driving the speakers. At least it's not very expensive.

On a side note, firmware updates most often do not fix disc reading issues. DVD technology has matured enough that disc reading issues have long since been resolved. Any reading issues you are likely to be having are either player or disc related.
