Just rearranged my entire computer area. I like it. Thought I'd show it.

Interesting. Below is my HTPC setup but it was taken before that 37" 1080p was RMA'd for a 47". I use it for DCC work as well since the two displays allow me to keep more things visible when working between applications (InDesign in the big monitor for layout and Photoshop/Illustrator in the main LCD). The new PC is being built so I'll have to take a snap next weekend when it's up 8)

I think that I may need therapy, since Faustus' setup is almost exactly like mine. the only difference is black (but same) case instead of blue, and my printer is parallel to the pc desk. I have the same MyBook drives (500GB ea). I have the EV SonicXS speakers.

What's that device by the laser printer?

My desk, where I spew my propoganda:

20" CRT weighs a ton and takes up too much real estate, but damn it's got a purty pikshur...
that's the ol' lady's desk off to the left...

    the 'jukebox' in the basement:

    note broken Wii down below...

    the HTPC:

with the 36" back-breaker front & center. That dirty mofo ain't moving ever again, I can't believe how much the beast weighs...
X-BOX, PS3, DVD, & receiver to the left - TurboGrafx-16 (!), SNES, N64, GameCube, and a yobo (knock-off NES) below - PC on the right
flash on the camera is quite unflattering to the home theatre... with just the dimmable 35W bulbs in the ceiling cans, the room is nice & dark -- you can't see any of the crap behind or under the set-up.

Here is my other workstation as it used to be. That one went onto the rack but is back in its vintage Lian Li case again and is on home automation duty. That's my first SMP workstation, the Tyan 2460 that I blew the ATX connector on

Mine is pretty much still the same.

Only things changed are the monitor (got a bigger one), computer (got a newer one), and modem (now use Comcast's with the digital phone service).

Not as bad as it seems - generally only the laser, server and desktop on.

Other computers are being reconfigured, one is going to be a media pc and put in the livingroom. Very seldom turn on a CRT - usually remote desktop to the server.

For a long time i experimented trying to get that perfect Pc solution, that is both very compact but also powerful/reliable. I built various mini towers, even once built one of those tiny cube PCs with an ultra tiny (mini-atx?)motherboard.

Then one day i just realized....get a laptop! This was recently in 2007 also, when GOOD quality basic laptops were FINALLY as cheap as budget desktops were in 2003.

Powerful with enough bells & whistles to do EVERYTHING i need, plus a little more. My baby that i plan on keeping for a LOOOOONG time:

    Dell Vostro 1000
    $450 total New, w/free shipping at dell.com

Note- This is actually my second laptop. Before this i had a Dell Inspiron B120, which was nice, but not QUITE as good as my current Vostro 1000.

Nice rigs guys I'll have to take some pics this weekend to show off.

@ faustus - I see you have two Western digital usb harddrives. What size? I got mine a few years ago - a 160gb formatted capacity of 149gb. Also - I have the same series logitech speakers. Do you have the 2.1 or 5.1 set? I have the 5.1 analog set that looks like those. Good speakers!!

One is a 250gb the other is a 500gb. To be honest I've had to return both of them at one time or another. The drives are fine but the enclosures keep dying on me. I normally would have just made my own externals but I got both of them on sale for less then I could have purchased the drives for at the time.

    @Fautus,
I didn't know that you can find that greentea drink in Texas. It's that an imported drink ? It's very cheap to get hard drive now. A 750gig hard disk is about $150 and 1 tera is about $170. Those Linksys enclosure is good.

    It's Lipton.

My old Dell 8300 is aging gracefully but I could use a complete overhaul. I need a cash flow boost before dumping too much money in another PC though. I just turned an old Gateway into a FreeNAS server this weekend. Once I paint it I'll take a few shots of the entire rig.

If your utility bill is low then this a good option. NAS consumes less power then a PC.

The global supply chain is amazing. The bottle in your picture looks the same as those in Singapore.

  25. Yep my PSU in this thing is only 200W. Hopefully that's enough once I put a 250GB HDD in it and a good set of fans. I'm using it mainly as a music server. I wish FreeNAS would step up the effort to make the system more secure though.

I've seen the Japanese Lipton bottle too and I'm pretty sure it's nearly identical as well.

What is NAS? What kind of server is it? Can you put it on a usb harddrive and connect to a xbox 360? Is it like tversity?

NAS = Netrowk Attached Storage. Basically a drive you plug into your network and everyone can see it.

Thanks squirreldip. Is that like a usb/firewire/esata drive that you add to a computer attached to the network then?

  29. Not exactly. I took at old Gateway PIII computer and put a couple of HDDs in it. Install FreeNAS to the small boot drive and then you can set up shares that all computers on the network can see. You just types the server's IP address to access it. It runs through an ethernet connection so it's a lot faster than most other storage devices. Basically the whole computer becomes a storage appliance. You can ever run a RAID configuration in it. You can get some more info on the system at www.freenas.org.
