Hello
I am doing an assignment for School where I have to investigate what equipment a cinema can get to upgrade its old equipment, example film projector to digital equipment such as digital projectors, I also have to take into consideration what mediums the movies will be on, example instead of film on some kind of hard drive or removable media, the filesize and what resolution the video shall be to display correctly. I also have to show prices for the type of projector i will need to use to project high quality video at the cinema.
Here is what the assignment sheets ask :
"The local picture theater has been bought out by a new owner. They want to replace the old equipment with some new equipment. You are required to investigate what new equipment they can get and what are the pro's and con's of the options"
What you will need to do :
1. Investigate what is needed to show high quality movies. Document your research
2. Obtain prices for the machine you have specified
3. What sort of infrastructure a movie theater would need.
4. With your research and investigate information, create a report that covers :
- Technical specifications for replacement hardware/software with prices and reasons behind the selected specification
- A replacement time line for future upgrades
- Cost of implementing your suggested hardware
- A suggested method of replacement so that the business has the least down time
- What infrastructure they should have in place
- What physical and logical security issues they should cover
Could you people please give me some pointers or some suggestions of hardware and software I could use in a theater to display high quality movies. Would there also be any countermeasures I could use to protect the movie being pirated? example camjobs and stealing the audio, as many new cinema's have audio jacks, which people could use to plug in their audio recorders to steal the audio track.
Thanks.

I would start with a internet search for 'digital movie theaters': http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=digital+movie+theaters&btnG=Google+Search
For security, I have heard of a infrared strobe light that messes up video taping. You can also use a infrared camera to detect a focusing beam from a video camera, though that probably only works when they are in auto focus mode. For the audio, it would be stereo anyway, You could use earphones like some airlines use, just hollow plastic tubes with no electrical signal to intercept. -
Thanks,
I have done some research and have found out that a Digital Cinema Server has to be used. But I cannot find prices on one that is capable of displaying a resolution of 4096 x 2160.
What type of projector should I use in conjunction with a digital cinema server. -
I hope you post your results. It wouldn't be fair for you to ask us to do your research but I'll toss you some clues from time to time to get you started and if I see gaps in what you find.
This will get you started.

Ok well here is what I found :
For Projectors :
The Sony SRXR220 - http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-projectors/cat-digitalcinema/product-SRXR220/
Christie Digital CP2000-SB
http://www.christiedigital.com/AMEN/Products/christieCP2000SB.htm
For Digital Cinema Servers :
Doremi DCP2000.pdf
http://www.doremicinema.com/PDF/DCP2000.pdf
what type of cable would I need to connect the Server to the projector, for displaying at 2k and 4k video resolutions. It says Dual Link HD-SDI? Is that still one cable?
I searched on wikipedia for HD-SDI and i found the following :
SMPTE 292M ?
SMPTE 372M ?
SMPTE 424M ?
The Doremi Server that I posted a link to a above, the specs say that it can dispaly 4k Video, but under the "Video Output" section it only mentions 2K (2048 x 1080) Using Dual Link HD-SDI
I read that HD-SDI Allows for bitrates upto 2.9/1.001 Gigabits, and that DVI-D Dual link allows for upto 7 gigabits, so wouldn't it be better to use DVI for Digital Cinema? but then again I read that everybody uses HD-SDI, I need to be able to display 2k and 4k Video Resolutions.
Now I understand that the video's can be in Motion JPEG2000 format, which will take about 200gb up, but what about the audio? Is it played back separately or is the Audio in the video file aswell?
i cant figure out what cant of audio processors and amplifier equipment would be needed.
