I needed to cut a large AVI file, I used VD-Mpeg2? but for the compression i used the DVix codec
DivX 6.8.3. codec (1 Logical CPU)
Delta Frames: No
FOURCC code 'divx'
Driver name: DivX.dll
Format restrictions:
Width must be a multiple of 4
Height must be a multiple of 2
Valid depths 24 32
I saved the file, andit came out playing ok, but my question is what do those restrictons mean? will the video work ok, with this always? can I use this codect in VB for anything? what does this mean?
I mean cause I always used the Xvid codec for compression, because it said there were no restrictions. but now I saved with this, and i'd like to know.

If you just are cutting then use video->direct stream copy to avoid reconversion.
Virtualdub will complain if the divx restrictions aren't followed when you save. The width and height means that your resolutions/frame size must be a multiple of 4 and 2. -
If you are doing just basic cuts and pastes, you don't need to re-encode (Reconversion) to Divx. Re-encoding will cause unnecessary quality loss. Direct stream copy doesn't re-encode. But if you make your cuts anywhere except a keyframe (I frame) you will need to re-encode at least at the cut point or risk sync problems and ragged cut transitions.
Keyframes are set to intervals of every 300 frames by default in Divx. That makes frame accurate editing very difficult. The newest versions of VD can just re-encode at the cut point by using the 'Smart rendering' feature.
Direct stream copy is much faster than re-encoding, even if 'smart rendering' is used.
