Is there any benefit from running Vegas Pro 8 on a 64-bit platform? I understand it runs fine on a 64-bit OS but since Vegas is a 32-bit application am I correct in assuming there is no benefit to running it on a 64-bit OS? I know that a 64-bit OS is best used in a dedicated or limited application because a lot of software doesn't run properly on it. But on a dedicated system for video editing, is there any benefit that I overlooking with respect to a 64-bit OS?

  2. Two benefits:

    1. Vegas will get the full amount of RAM that a 32-bit application can - i.e., 2GB (usually) if you have the RAM. On a 32-bit OS, the OS can only use up to ~3.5GB and all running apps have to share it.

    2. Related to 1., you can run other apps without hurting Vegas (as long as you have enough RAM installed). You could even run multiple instances of Vegas without them having to share the same 2GB in the 32-bit world. Each 32-bit process gets its own 32-bit world to play in - parallel universes, if you like.

Most 32-bit software (as opposed to drivers etc) runs just fine on a 64-bit platform since it runs natively as 32-bit rather than be emulated.

Some of my own tests show that some CPU intensive 32-bit apps can run slightly faster (a couple of percent) on the 64-bit platform.

In the last couple of months, I have all but switched from 32-bit Vegas to 64-bit primarily so I can develop 32- and 64-bit versions of the same software. I've installed all my usual set of 32-bit apps and haven't had a single problem.

Ironically, though, the one I haven't gotten around to installing is Vegas!
