Not sure if this helps but I have Sony KDL XBR 4 52" LCD. I view in HD am connected through HDMI from my cable box / dvr by Comcast!
I can't get CC to work through the TV through the HDMI but I can on Analog..
Two things!
1. To turn my CC on. I had to turn off the cable box, then press the GUIDE button (the orange one on the comcast remote on the right) then a white menus appears on the TV screen! Your TV has to be on of course! Then you can turn on CC and make a few other interesting changes.
2. This comes from Sony's site! It says you can't get CC through HDMI all the time! Here's the dialog! Hope it helps!

The procedure to activate closed captioning varies depending on the how the source signal is connected to the television.
* An analog input: In the television menu, set Caption Vision to CC1.
* Digital Tuner: In the television menu, set Caption Vision to either Basic or Advanced. To receive closed caption on analog channels, select Basic. To receive closed caption on digital chanels, select Advanced.
* HDMI: When using the HDMI connection, closed captioning must be generated by the source device (satellite receiver, cable box, DVD player, etc.), not by the television. Enable closed captioning on the source device.
IMPORTANT: Closed captioning may or may not function when viewing High-Definition Television (HDTV) programming. After following the steps above, contact your signal provider for further assistance.
For model- or device-specific information, consult the instruction manual that came with the television or source device. Manuals for Sony products are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the SonyŽ eSupport Web site.
NOTES:
* Not all stations broadcast programs (including commercials) with closed captioning.
* When changing channels on the TV, there may be a delay before closed captioning begin to display.
* TVs manufactured before July 1993 may not have closed captioning capability.
* If the source device does not have a closed caption option, connect the device to the television using composite, S-Video or component connections. After making these connections, use the television menu to activate the closed caption feature.
* After making the appropriate menu selections, some SonyŽ TVs can enable or disable the closed caption information by pressing the DISPLAY button on the supplied remote control.
