How do you utilize SPDIF for AC3 or DTS audio using ffdshow? When I use ffdshow with the default codecs for AC3 or DTS the audio channels get mapped to the analog audio ports just fine. Only problem is I can get better quality if I use the digital optical out. When I change the codec for both to SPDIF the little tray icon for audio doesn't show up when I try to play a file and Media Player Classic crashes. What can I do?

Use instead ac3 filter for ac3 and dts spdif output.

I think I may do that on the condition I can set AC3 Filter to do those audio formats only and ffdshow to cover the rest. Would you know how to do so?Originally Posted by Baldrick

Disable ac3 and dts in ffdshow. Install ac3 filter. In the ac3 filter configuration click on the Use spdif checkbox.

Ah thanks. That worked except for one item. If I check Use spdif, I only hear noise when I play a file. If I leave the settings the same, but do not check Use spdif, I will hear stereo audio when I play something. I can then open the config while the file is playing and enable spdif and it works. Do you know any workarounds?Originally Posted by Baldrick
FYI, it looks like AC3 Filter spdif uses less resources than ffdshow ac3 or dts.
EDIT: I'm hoping that somebody who reads this can get in contact with the people that work on ffdshow. It looks like Creative didn't want SPDIF to be used on my sound card, X-Fi Notebook, and didn't make it easy to use it then. Like I mentioned before, SPDIF doesn't work automatically like on other sound cards, you have to initialize it after whatever media you're planning on viewing has started playing. Don't know why but a lot of people are having this same problem.
