I need a cable to transfer my miniDV tapes to HardDrive, the iLink cables are just extortionately priced Firewire cables right? but will any old 4pin to 6pin Firewire cable do, there seems to be differences in prices between these, should I get the more expensive cables? thanks
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

You can use the common-or-garden variety without any problems. It's just a glorified serial port...
