  1. What font does VLC Media Player use when use a separate subtitle file (rather than one encoded with a DVD)? I like that font and wondered if it was something that was part of VLC's settings or if it was using one that was in my Windows fonts that I didn't recognize.

  2. What type of subtitle file are you using? SRT? IDX/SUB? something else? There are basically two types of subtitles: text and graphic. If you are using a text font (like SRT) VLC lets you specify what font to use (Settings -> Preferences -> Video -> Subtitles -> Text Renderer -> Font). On my system I haven't specified any font but it appears to be using Ariel (white text with a thin black outline). Graphic fonts (like IDX/SUB) are pictures of text so VLC is simply showing you the pictures. The font used is whatever the person who created the pictures selected.

  3. I was using an .srt file and I don't have any font specified but it seemed more elegant than arial.

I don't know how it decides what font to use when none is specified. It might be defaulting to some system font.
