I tried looking through the thread for this tool and became very confused as there were several conversations going on at once. I downloaded this tool because it seems to be exactly what I need to try to finish this month long project. After futzing with my pc, a capture device, and my old Sony hi8 I gave up and borrowed a tempermental DVDR (Panasonic E-50) I could probably have gotten better video if I played around with the capture card some more, but I probably would have also ended up divorced, so this works. I now have about 9 DVD-R (that play in both the dvd player and the pc) discs from 7 hi8 tapes that are pretty good. From here I would like to save these as backups somewhere else and create discs with chapters and a menu. Nothing fancy, maybe edit a couple of places where one disc filled in the middle of a scene and I rewound to start the next disc.
Now I have these .vob files that no program wants to work with. I want to convert them as little as possible as the video is as low a quality as I am willing to accept given I spent $500 on the camera only a few years ago.
I know that was a long lead in to my question, but I thought some background might help.
I directed VOB2MPG to the top folder in the disc drive and output to the desktop so I could see it. One click of a button and it was off and running (such a relief after all of this). My problem is that it seemed to drop 40 mins in the conversion. The disc is 1:55 and the mpg file is 1:09. I am assuming that it did not convert all of the vobs, but you know what they say about assume. Any ideas would help. TIA

I did find mention of a program called FixVTS. So far, I have not been able to get it to work. Is it because the files are on a DVD-R, or are they that bad? I tried the next disc in the batch and it came out to the same file size as the disc, so it must have something to do with the DVDR not liking the first disc I used, before I switched to better media. I'd rather not re-record it but I will if I have to. Do I need to copy the files off the DVD for FixVTS to work? If so how, Windows wants 10 hrs to do it with right click >copy.
