Everytime I open a xvid encoded vid in MPC, the divx icon appears in my systray. I've checked the vids and they're not corrupt. I'm assuming this conflict is what makes my seeking in a vid freeze for about 6 seconds instead of instantly starting again. I'm referring to the manual seek bar in MPC.
I have xvid and divx codecs installed but I've not messed with the filters/settings in MPC.
xvid is 1.1.3
divx is 6.8.2
MPC is 6.4.9.1
I like having the preview thumbnail in explorer so I can't rely on ffdshow.

To keep Divx from playing Xvid files disable the "support decoding of generic MPEG-4 video" option in the Divx Playback Configuration utility. This probably won't fix your problem though.
-
Thank you both for the advice.
I had overlay already unchecked and I unchecked generic mpeg-4 option.
Now, when I try to open a video that's been encoded with xvid, MPC opens the "failed to render some pins in the graph" error message. Here's the media type information listed on that same error message screen:
Media Type 0:
--------------------------
Video: XVID 640x480 29.97fps 3579Kbps
MPC will then proceed to play just the audio.
I have the newest xvid installed. Any suggestions? -
It sounds like Xvid isn't installed properly. I would try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
Regarding overlay, the player may start a little more quickly without overlay but CPU usage will be higher while playing. Youalso lose a lot of other overlay features like TV output, hardware proc amp controls, etc. -
I had to untick the hardware overlay after upgrading DivX again but after going in and putting the tick back in, everything is OK.
Not sure why every time I upgrade DivX, I have to fix this problem. I think it does have something to do with MPC though because after fixing it the last time, I got an error message from some program that told me I needed to uninstall Quicktime (which I don't have but it shows up in control panel) and reinstall QT alternative and MPC. That must've cured the overlay problem but I won't swear on it.
Reinstalling both XviD and MPC after a DivX upgrade is probably the best remedy. -
What version do you have? I didn't start having the problem until the 6.x version. Now the codec takes over all my mpeg4 files every time I upgrade.
I also have to back up a registry file every time I install Nero and restore it because Nero takes over half of my file types. I installed the same version on my brothers' machine and it didn't take over any file types. -
I have Divx 6.8.2 installed right now. And Xvid 1.2.127. Divx has been updated several times as they seem to release a new version every month or two.

Just updated DivX today and once again, the decoder took over AVI playback. It was easy to fix this time by just by unticking "support decoding of generic MPEG-4 video". I also had to untick "show DivX logo matermark. Pretty sure I'll have to reinsert the DivX Pro serial number.
Not sure why DivX can't just keep the same user settings every time it updates. -
Surprisingly, it remembered the DivX Pro serial number this time. Maybe they're slowly starting to weed the bugs out. It also looks like they fixed the player. It was a resource hog before but this version hardly uses any resources at all. Around 4% for full resolution and around 25% for High Def.
