Trying to hook up Component to Composite video

Good day all....I have a question regarding the connection of some AV equipment that I hope that someone may be able to help me out with.

I am trying to connect a Toshiba DVD/VCR combo with only component outputs to a TV that only has composite/s-video inputs.

I went online and bought a device which converts component signal into composite and S-video and connected the 3 appartus together (DVD to the converter, the converter to the TV).

For some reason that still doesn't work...when I turn the DVD/VHS player on, the TV screen shows the Toshiba "Loading" page which flickers for a few seconds and then the signal dies. I am trying to figure out what the problem might be, and this is where I need some help.

My best guess at the moment is that the vertical frequency of the TV is 60hz and possibly the vertical frequency of the DVD/VCR player is 50Hz. Both systems are PAL and were purchased in Dubai. Any thoughts?

Hate to ask what may be obviously simple in an attempt to trouble shoot. Have you tried just connecting the blue output of the component on the combo player to the yellow composite input of the TV? That should contain all the video signal that the composite input would be looking for.

Maybe the converter device is part of the problem. As asked, make and model numbers of the combo player, tv and converter could be helpfull in troubleshooting.

You can buy a converter box. Here's the cheapest one I found with a quick search:

I know nothing about this company.

The prices on converters for this are high. I found several that cost over $200 US.

I just tried hooking the blue component output on the combo to the yellow composite input on the TV, but that didn't seem to do anything.

Jman, the converter box that you linked is actually the one that I am using. It was $129.99 at the time. I was able to establish that it works by connecting my NTSC toshiba dvd player to my NTSC TV using the box, but I think the problem between the PAL toshiba combo and my PAL TV may be of a different nature.

According to this, you have a multi-system unit and it does have composite, component and SCART out. The manual should show a possible SCART to S-Video connection with adapter.

Regardless, you should be getting video over composite to an NTSC TV if in NTSC output mode and in PAL in PAL output mode.

What is the TV model number? Doesn't the PAL TV have SCART inputs?

Thanks...the Toshiba has scart outputs as well, but I don't have a scart cable and for some reason it doesn't seem like they sell them in the US. It has composite inputs, but not outputs.

The TV is a cheap 20" ELEKTA LCD screen that I picked up for about $250 in Dubai. I'm using it as my PC's monitor right now since I can't get it to work with the DVD/VHS combo. It doesn't have scart inputs...only composite, VGA and S-Video. According to the manual it is PAL and only does 60 Hz signal.

I'll try hooking up this Toshiba to my NTSC TV again...running out of options!

Check your manual. The link above says you have a composite output. Maybe it is located on the SCART connector. You can buy adapters.



It also says "Important Notice! Must be played back on a multi-system TV."
That means PAL discs need a PAL capable TV and NTSC discs need an NTSC capable TV.

If you can't find a yellow out connector, this sort of adapter will tap into composite video and stereo audio off the SCART connector. Shop around online for lower prices.
