    Hi all,

I have an mpg file that supposed to be about 5 minutes long, but only shows 48 seconds when playing it. The remaining "hidden" portion of the video will sometimes display if I scrub or pause the video.

Is there a way to get this lost portion back, maybe by decompressing the video (just guessing there) or some other trick?

    Thanks!

Mpegrepair doesn't seem to work with .mpg files directly, just hdtv streams. The only tool I found in the repair section was MPEG Corrector, but it only partially recovered the file.

What about decompressing the mpg? Is that a possibility?

PVAStrumento also can fix MPEG files as can ReJig.

Is this MPEG-1 or MPEG-2? If it's MPEG-1, you can also try VCDGear. Set the Extraction/Conversion to mpeg->mpeg.

Remember to try them on a copy of the file...Some changes could be for the worse.

Last night I was messing around in VirtualDub on another project, when I noticed for the first time that it can work with MPGs (I had thought it only worked with AVI files).

I opened the mpg file and did a simple save as avi, which created a 3.5 GB avi with all the content restored. I then comprssed it with xvid and viola! fixed video!

I'm kicking myself for not checking VirtualDub first. Srsly, is there anything it CAN'T do? I definately need to explore it more so I'll know it's capabilities.

VirtualDubMod can work with MPEG files. I don't know about true VirtualDub being able to do this.

That's a pretty ugly "fix" to do 2 format conversions, but if that works for you and you're OK with it, so be it.

The newest versions (1.7.7 - 1.8.0) of VD can accept MPEG files after a MPEG plug-in is added. I've used VD for years and I still don't know all it can do. But I would agree that the less conversions you do, the less the quality will suffer.

yeah, it was good enough. Actually, it came out looking as good as I could expect, considering the so-so quality of the original mpg.

Anyway, thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Videohelp has to be one of the best forums around, imo.
