I am trying to capture videos using Pinnacle Studio 8 the program I've been using for 5 years. The problem is the program freezes on my new computer when trying to capture, not only Pinnacle but other software programs that capture. In short, the capture button on any program freezes, but I can edit videos.
    I tried this program http://www.winavi.com/en/download/download.htm
and didn't even let me try to capture. When I installed the program the first thing it said when it launched was something about my device being abend. Then another error saying it failed and I cant see video preview.

I installed a new Video Card and uninstalled the old one. The new card is working though I cant seem to find a good resolution I'm trying 1152x864 now, but its not clear picture, the words and everything are blurry. Anyway back to the original problem. I tested the capture again and still same result. I have zero ideas left, I am willing to try anything.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I don't see a capture card listed there, just a display card. Can you give the exact brand and model of your 'capture card'?

What type of computer monitor are your using, LCD or CRT? LCDs have a 'native resolution' at which they work best. All other resolutions will tend to be 'blurry'. CRT monitors are more flexible, but will benefit from using a higher refresh rate, IE more than 60Hz. 75Hz is a good choice, higher if your monitor and CRT will allow. LCDs work best at 60Hz for the US.

    And welcome to our forums.

This is the product I have:
    http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/software/graphics/soa/Pinnacle-Studio-MovieBox-DV/0,13...0280441,00.htm
I guess its called Moviebox DV
    I have a LCD monitor.

I just installed this Video Card

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
    Chip type: GeForce 8600 GT
    DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
    Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0402&SUBSYS_C7503842&REV_A1
    Display Memory: 256.0 MB

    Thanks, that info helped.

Use only the native resolution of your LCD monitor for best picture. I have a 22" wide screen LCD and it only works properly at 1680 X 1050. All other resolutions are blurry. Leave the refresh at 60Hz. I would also enable 'Clear Type' fonts as your system fonts as they are designed for LCD use. Type ' clear type ' into your OS help and support box to search for info on setting up and adjustments.

Are you using the USB or FireWire version of that capture device? I'm guessing USB. When you plug in the USB do you get a 'ding' from the OS or a bubble that says the device is connected? Does it show up in the Device Manager in your Control Panels? Have you tried other USB ports? Have you tried it on a different computer? Tried a different USB cable?

The highest resolution is 1280x1024 on my settings, but it does look clear now with that setting. I guess I'm still not used to my new graphics.

Its through firewire. It does recognize the capture device and I can use the program with no problem until I try to capture. Everything works fine on my older computer, but when I got this new computer the program had this problem from day 1. I haven't run across any other video problems with this computer. The only thing semi-related was when I was playing a newer video game Command & Conquer 3 I had a lot of problems with my game closing on me during big battles and I had errors from that then my hard drive crashed. I didn't dare to try it when I got my new hard drive but I played Warcraft 3 without problems.

FireWire is much better. I would try WinDV and see if you can do a transfer with it to your hard drive. DV is a fixed format, basically the same frame size as DVD and same framerate. With DV, it's not really a capture. More like a data transfer from one device to another. DV is already digital, so it doesn't need a conversion as in a capture. I use a Canopus ADVC-100 analog to DV converter that is similar.

If WinDV doesn't work either, I would try the device on a different computer. If your FireWire connection is on the motherboard or on a audio card, a very few of them have problems. If you have a free PCI slot, you could try a add-on FireWire card. Though it sounds like your existing FireWire connection is working. It may still be a software problem.

Some video games take a lot of CPU and graphics card power. Usually you can set the framerate or video game settings to lower quality and if it plays without crashing, that may be all that's involved.

Your LCD monitor is probably a 17" model. 1280x1024 is a common resolution for that size. If you go into your video card settings, you could also do some 'fine tuning' of color balance, contrast and brightness and other settings there. Usually the default settings are fine. You can also make adjustments on the monitor itself, but again, default is usually fine.

I just discovered something that may help you guys help me. Though my computer does recognize my firewire and I can select moviebox dv settings, when the firewire is plugged in and I press capture the program freezes and will only unfreeze when I unplug the firewire. I can hit the capture button all day without the firewire plugged in, obviously though I am unable to use moviebox dv settings.

Is the FireWire cable detachable from the moviebox? If so, you might try another cable. I would also inspect the cable ends and the sockets very closely to see if there might be some damage to them. And if you have a friend with a DV camcorder, you might try that to see if the problem is in your computer or connectors, or your external box. Having the computer recognize the DV device seems the most common problem reported with DV transfers. But what you are describing is seeming more like a connector, device or software problem.

BTW, have you tried WinDV and gotten the same results?

I tried WinDV and same things occurred. I dont have a problem using the equipment on my other comp. I could try to see if my friends external hard drive is able to transfer files through firewire, would that be a good test?

Using a hard drive with FireWire should test the FireWire data transfer part of it. If that fails then you may have a problem with the FireWire port on the computer. If the drive works, a camcorder would be the next thing to try as that would give you a DV stream. If all that fails, I would consider getting a PCI FireWire card, I'm not sure of another way to diagnose it.

I bought a USB capture device (Dazzle DVD Recorder) and I was able to capture from my xbox. Now I got a new error which I dont know if its from the program or what. I was looking in the folder where my captured videos go and making sure they worked and they did but when I go in the folder I get an error that makes me close the folder but I ignored it and clicked on another video then I got a blue screen error.
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

I dont know if you need the error numbers but I wrote them down anyway.

Your captured file is probably corrupted which causes troubles for the preview (if u know what i mean) you have to disable this option but i can't remember how now.Google is your friend.

    edit:
i remember now (because i have noted it somewhere )

    go to: start>run & type in: REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL

    hopefully that'll solve your problem
