Can anyone give me the name of the best security suite for a home PC, such as firewall, antivirus etc. I don't mind if its freeware or software although a freeware suite would be best. I have been looking around the net and I can't find much on them, I found one chart but it only compares payware suites. I heard AVG is not as good as it used to be.

Like video processing, I find the best tool for each job is far better than a single tool that tries to do everything. I use

    NOD32 (Antivirus)
    Comodo Personal Firewall Pro (Firewall)
    Spybot S & D and SpywareBlaster (Anti-Spyware)

They run in a combined footprint that is far smaller that any all-in-one suite, and any single component is easier to change out should something better come along (e.g. I recently moved from AVG to NOD as I was sick of AVG's false positives)

  5. I moved from AVG to Avast as I was also sick of the false positives and the real positives that it couldn't do anything about. Avast is also free.

Not a fan of all in ones usually because I'm not a fan of Software firewall.

That being said, AVG is decent, and NOD32 is the master. However NOD32 seems to use more resources then AVG Security. Both I have ran in one way or another but with the firewall off/not installed.

Hate doing it, but, no all-in-ones for me either. Haven't met one that I've liked in well over 5 years. Probably Nortons 2002... They're just way to intentionally invasive and resorce intensive.

I've gone to Avast, Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D for my PCs at home. I help friends and others with cleaning up their PCs, just 2 or 3 a month or so, and the first thing I do if I find it is rip out Nortons or McAfee and install what I just mentioned. If they don't have a firewall built into their cable modem/router then I'll use the built in XP. Anything else I find is too complicated for others to use regularly.
    Have a good one,

on a quad core.....i guess even the almighty slow/heavy Panda suite runs fine on it.

i use and recommend kaspersky internet security for an all in one suite. i dont notice it running in the background.

over the last 2 years i tested several combinations of free and non fre combinations on AVERAGE COMPUTERS(p4 single core) and altough it is a commercial product it is to me worth the 40 euros. (antivirus+firewall+spyware).
I love it when a plan comes together!

I'm not a fan of software firewalls either, but I've been impressed with Comodo. At least I've found it better using it than just depending on hardware firewalls. I used an old copy of Syquest firewall for several years, but it won't run on my newer Vista computers. Vista has an almost non-existant firewall which only works on incoming packets, giving zero protection from malware 'phoning home'.

On most of my computers I run Avast antivirus, SpyBot , Comodo and Spyware Blaster as minimum. BTW, all freeware. The all-in-ones like Norton have failed me multiple times in the past, I won't even consider them. For one computer more exposed to the net, I also add ProtoWall IP blocker and Blocklist Manager to set up the lists.

With all the computers, no viri, trojan or any other type of malware has caused any problems in quite some time.
