Never been a big fan of Maxtor drives, and never had good experiences with them. Seagate and Western Digital produce much better HDDs. That said, we have had a poor run with Seagate external drives of late. We purchased 5 over a period of a few months, and three have had issues with the USB interfaces. The drives themselves seem to be OK, but the USB side means data is lost and drives simply become inaccessible. Very disappointing.

On the other hand, I have 2 seagate drives in generic external housings that have never missed a beat, and a WD My Book that is also going strong.

But Maxtor ? Not on my watch.

Yuh, I just had (2) SATA Maxtor drives fail on me but luckily I was able to transfer all the data to another hd. No more Maxtor's for me. As suggested get a Seagate of Western Digital hd.

Any drive can fail ten minutes after you first use it, or work perfectly for ten years or more. The vast majority of hard drives should last several years, even with heavy use, and be problem free. That said, I wouldn't trust any data that I couldn't afford to lose to a hard drive as they will fail at some point. You should always back up irreplaceable data to other media.

Bad sectors can happen with any drive, at any time. Drives can bypass those bad sectors and replace them with sectors that are held in reserve. The drive will still be fully functional. But too many bad sectors and the drive runs out of replacement/reserved sectors, then it can become unreliable.

The actual hard drive failure rate is probably less than a few percent of the number of drives that are used. JMO. Not really a factor if you do back up your data.

I like both Seagate and Western Digital hard drives, myself. Both seem to have a five year warranty on most models. That doesn't mean they will last five years, but at least they will be replaced if they fail during that period. I would only buy hard drives that have a good warranty.

I like Seagate quite a bit. My last 2 internal drives have been seagates.

WD has been okay to me also though I no longer like the MyBook Drives because they keep dying on me. The cases not the drives.

I'm running a total of 6 maxtor drives in my home computers. Never had an issue at all. Only time i've changed to another maxtor drive was lack of space. I am also faithful with defragging my HDD's. Just my two cents.

  7. Throw me on the WD bandwagon. I have rarely had any issues with a WD hard drive. Maxtor I have had touch and go experience with. Seagate has been positive but then again, Ive only ever owned one Seagate drive.

  8. I started with Maxtor 10 to 12 years ago, with time, about 2004 Maxtor went down hill.
I have 5 year old 80 gig maxtor I don't count here, still running raid for OS XP on Xeon Servers

Changed to WD and have 35 about WD 250Gig to 750gig, 6 or 7 250gig drives crashed, no more WD massive data lost and time to restore, NO WD

Seagate only all 75 hard drives now, no Seagate failures.

    Bye WD or Maxtor.

    never tried enything else.
