I have been furiously backing-up all of my DVDs into AVI, and have made SRT subtitle files for each film or T.V. episode which contains "forced subs" (i.e. something in another language (e.g. LOTR), or for Anime). I have then burned these onto DVD-Rs.
My Toshiba SD270-E displays SRT subtitles, but in a folder containing any subtitle files at all, the player displays a dialogue box asking to select the subtitle file I wish to load.
Now, if I have 12 episodes of Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross on a disc, with 12 corresponding SRT files (same name, different extension); is there a DVD player which will recognise this "same name" concept, and automatically load the appropriate subtitle file?. It's annoying when watching 12 episodes straight, because I might not be sure which episode I'm up to, and I will invariably select the wrong subtitles. Additionally, it's a royal pain in the proverbial backside to have to scroll to each successive subtitle file if I want to just sit down with a bag of popcorn and have an uninterrupted Bleach session.
So, basically, I was wondering if anyone knew of a DivX (Well, I use Xvid, but all the players I've used are compatible with both) Player which can be configured (it doesn't have to be the default behaviour) to automatically load the "same name" SRT subtitle file; preferably for something in the less than £50 region.
Also, it would be nice to know how the player displays the subtitles with regards to timing. My Toshiba SD270-E, rather than displaying each caption at the exact time it is referenced in the SRT file, displays them to the nearest second. Really! I have watched a video with a subtitle, watching the elapsed-time counter, and the captions come on and off only when the seconds indicator changes. Wierd. It would be immensely cool to know if a DVD Player (pref. in the same price range) displayed the subs at the exact (well, better than to the nearest second) time.
Cheers!
