Does it only happen with CDs? Burned or commercial (Music) CDs? Do DVDs play properly, commercial and burned?

It would be odd that two drives show the same behavior. It could be a virus, do a through scan of your system to try to eliminate that as a cause.

You could also try uninstalling the channel the drives are on, that will refresh the drivers. You will see that option in Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then the channel the drive is on.

1: Name of operating system ?

2: Name of most "used" burning application ? ... or list burning applications installed

3: If issue is more related to "burnt" media, list by brand name.

4: Drive models involved, and if sharing internal cables inside system?
(if yes, when one sneezes, the other generally starts acting up later, optical units are best kept separate)

You answered before my post, so

Check for updated firmware for drives affected.
Flash both drives, and check if problem exists after.
