Was the disc finalised in the camera ?

    It's a standalone recorder

But what guns1inger said, they usually don't autofinalize the disc, you have to do it manually.

  4. Hi
I have finalized the disk. The DVD has 2 directories on it. VIDEO_RM, VIDEO_TS. The Vobs in the VIDEO_TS are unuseable in editors, yet it plays in other stand alone players.
When I rip the files, it rips fine, but the resulting files are not watchable. Even VLC won't play them.

In what editors ? Many editors don't like VOB files.

    Things to try :

DVD Shrink. It will probably see two of every title. Use re-author mode to select one of each title, then backup the results to a HDD folder.

Once you have this folder, try VOB2MPG to extract the mpg content from the VOBs created by Shrink, and edit those instead. The process is lossless until you edit, then all bets are off.

  6. Hi guns1inger
This is becoming a pain. I purchased the recorder so I could do a fast VHS transfer then re author the disk. I can't rip the disk to a useable state. The VOBs show up but are corrupt when trying to VOB2MPG or import into TMPGENC. Yet the darn disk plays in any stand alone player....
It seems to be something to do with the way panasonic creates a DVD.

This is what I get with shrink.

If you are not editing on the disc, then there is no reason to record in VR mode. I only ever record in video mode (Pioneer recorder), so I only get a Video_TS folder, and I rip directly to the HDD with VOB2MPG before editing with VideoRedo/Womble.

Check your manual and change the recording mode, then see if things change.

  8. All is well now. I tried a -RW and RAM. Both rip fine. Must be something with +R that was bugging me....

    Thanks for the suggestions.
