A friend's son who is a student is interested in buying the academic version of Sony Vegas Pro 8 which is considerably less than the standard version. Is there any difference in the product itself or is this just a discounted price on the standard product for students?

It will most likely be a full version with licensing restrictions - private educational use only, no commercial work etc.

More software makers should take a page out of Apple's play book. Pay attention to the students, they are your future customers. People are creatures of habit. When they become proficient with a piece of software, they tend to stick with it especially with professional products. If you "catch um when they're young", there is a good chance they will be a long term user / customer.

A lot of major software is sold at academic discounts.

MS practically gives away their operating systems. Just go over to the academic software web site and check out whats on sale. If you got a kid in grade school, you qualify for MS discounts.
