This might be an unusual post as I'm not looking for high quality rather just standard quality.
I have a basic linux rig that I use to stream media to my PS3 which is attached to a widescreen CRT TV (remember those) and is also attached to my amp vis TOSlink (optical).
I have a lot of hi-def stuff on the pc (MKV containers with h264 video and AC3 audio) that I want to play on the widescreen TV. Using a mediaserver (Mediatomb) I can trascode on the fly (thus the original file is untouched and additional disk space is not required) to the PS3 using a ffmpeg script.
What I want to know is the following:
1) What video codec would give good performance/comaptibility with PS3? (Divx in MP4? MPEG2?)
2) What resolution should I stream at considering the display it will be viewed on? (A lower res means better performace for me)
3) What format (regarding ffmpeg arguments) should I output to? (dvd? mpeg?)
I stream alot of avi movie files in DIVX/XVID that are 640xXXX resolution (widescreen) and they look good enough for me. That should give you an idea of the quality I am after.
Remember that I will be running on Linux and using ffMPEG for the transcoding, so command lines of your suggestions for ffMPEG would be a great help!
Manythanks if you can help me out on this!
Russell
P.S.
I've tried looking into demux/remux the MKV HD files using mkvextraxt then hexedit the h264 profile from 5.1 to 4.1 then using tsMuxeR to recombine them but can't get that route to work.
