Well I bought a PS3 Monday - the 40gb model. I like it so far. I bought it mostly for the bluray playback. My computer does do bluray well at dual core amd 2.7ghz but it still stutters occasionally. The ps3 doesn't. Also the fan noise is considerbally lower than my xbox 360 which I have been using for my dvd/hddvd playback. I may start using the ps3 for dvd/bluray playback now and relegate my xbox to games and hddvd playback because of the noise issue. (it's not that loud but during quiter moments you have to turn it up a little bit to get over the fan noise, the ps3 is noticeably quiter).

1 quick question - is there any way to set the ps3 to 1366x768 resolution? I have it set to 1080i and seems to be pretty good. However I love the 1360x768 my xbox 360 pumps out for dvds. Is there any way to get a matching resolution on a ps3? Is there a pixel for pixel mode somewhere?

So what about games? I bought HEAVENLY SWORD the night I bought. I like it. I Have God of War one and 2 but haven't it played it much at all. THis kind of makes me want to take another crack at those.

One thing I think I like the xbox better than the ps3 on is the replaceable batterypack on the wireless xbox controllers. I have two rechargeable battery packs for the 360 and I can swap them out when one gets low. I bought an extra dual shock wireless six axis controller but you have to charge them via usb which kinda sucks. If one runs low you can't pluck in new batteries and roll on. I'll have to look into charging docks for the ps3 controllers.

Also I'm interested in the media playback of the ps3. Since I've had no end to the troubles of getting my xbox 360 lanned to my vista pc (wifi is just fine for music streaming but video chokes hence my quest for lan connection). I haven't connected the ps3 to my pc yet but I'm interested in how it will perform.

  2. ok why the hell would you bother with 1366x768. if your panel can do 1080i stick with that. if you really want to change it's in the display settings.

Gran Turismo 5 prologue, GT4 if you haven't already got it on xbox and the upcoming Metal gear solid 4. will keep you happy for awhile.

then to media streaming, to be honest this is what i use my ps3 for the most. get yourself a UPnP server (nero media home, tversity, some routers have this built in now too) as soon as you activate UPnP it will be added in as a server on the ps3 then you just navigate and play what you want. As you already know wireless sucks, just not enough bandwidth, you need a cabled ethernet connection.

My short list of PS3 games:
    - Need for Speed Carbon = not worth the money though it would make an entertaining rental
    - Blazing Angels = run as far from this game as you have the energy for, and then kill yourself so you don't ever experience it
    - Need for Speed Pro Street = challenging racing game but having to repair damage all the time gets annoying quick
    - Dirt = fantastic offroad/rally racing sim which I highly recommend
    - Assassin's Creed = amazing graphics and a great story that keeps you guessing (and also ties in some real history)
    - Gran Turismo 5 Prologue = the "preview" version of the full release (not slated until 2010 I hear) but has wonderful graphics and is fun multiplayer
    - Grand Theft Auto 4 = I'm working through this one now but I'm not getting into it as much as I did with some of the GTA3 titles. It's certainly more challenging than previous versions but it seems more limited with its free roaming mini-games. Also having to maintain friendships in the game gets really annoying when you're just trying to run around and have fun.

As for the hardware you can really only set TV standard definitions. I have a 1080p LCD so I run everything at max settings, but unfortunately only so many games support that res. TVersity works OK but I've been using Orb on mine for streaming. Forget wireless. I have mine going through the wired GbE switch and I get good results with it even at HD quality.

Are you getting rid of the BRD drive in your PC then?

@bigmicka - so I can use tversity and an ethernet cable and that will work for my ps3? That sounds good I'll have to try it.

I'll rent Gran Turismo, I'm not a huge fan of racing games though.

Is assasins creed too passive? I mean is it all stealth and limited action? I'm not sure if thats for me.

I'm not getting rid of the bluray drive. I figure I may someday buy anydvdhd and go the backup route.

Thanks for the tips. It's a shame I can't get the 768p. I just like the idea of matching my max res. 1080i is nice but I just figure I should be able to be the same as my set and the xbox lets me do that

Resistance: Fall of Man. !!! Get it!
NFS Carbon is OK, I picked it up new at CompUSA for $20 so I don't feel ripped off.
The new Ratchet & Clank is damned sweet.

Assassin's Creed can either be brute force or stealth for most missions. However because of how crowded the streets are you can get overwhelmed if you don't just run for cover and wait out the heat. It's even more violent than GTA4 ever could wish to be with the methods of execution available to you. For instance when you knock an enemy down and they're slowly writhing into death you can finish them off rather brutally. But once you unlock all the weapons and moves then it gets to be really fun just running around and taunting soldiers to come after you. Again the graphics are amazing and well worth checking out.

If you aren't into racing sims then I'd probably recommend Dirt over GT5P. It takes a while to unlock vehicles in GT5 and they're rather limited. Dirt doesn't take long before you can afford a selection of vehicles and there are plenty of different racing modes to keep you entertained. My favorite is the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the big rig 8)

Did you miss the recommendation for GTA4? That's probably the most entertainment for your buck right now on the PS3.

    I bought a PS3 back in December 2007

So far my favorite games are:

    UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE
Bought this when I got my PS3 and damn this game looks great and plays great and is probably the best game that is a PS3 exclusive (although I admit I've only played the DEMO of HEAVENLY SWORD). I would definately buy this game! It's a mix between TOMB RAIDER and INDIANA JONES yet manages to have it's own unique charm. The game was so well received that a sequel is already in the works.

    BURNOUT: PARADISE
Apparently this series has been around for a while but only recently made it's debut with this title (PARADISE) on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Well I never heard of it but I had downloaded the demo and man did I get hooked on it bad. I mean BAD. I'm no fan of "driving"/"race" games but this game is unique and takes it to an all new level! Totally intense and fun and the graphics are simply jaw dropping. Has a lot of on-line play value to it so get the PS3 version as on-line play is free plus my understanding is (knock on wood) that the PS3 version is better than the XboX 360 version.

    CONAN
This is another game that is on the PS3 and the XboX 360 but I rented the PS3 version and I enjoyed it. If you like GOD OF WAR then this is basically the same thing but you are CONAN. Very nice graphics (although I wasn't blown away) and good control. One bad thing though is that the game is not balanced very well. I played in "NORMAL" mode (as I recall there was a choice of EASY, NORMAL & HARD) yet I had some really tough times and by the 4th "BOSS" they get to be almost impossible. I spend several hours and god knows how many "attempts" trying to beat just one boss and the next one I got to ... never could get past it because after two days of trying it was time to return the game! Last I checked you can pick this up for $29.99 so I'll probably buy it and try to pick up on my saved gamed from the rental but I have a feeling I might have to start over in "EASY" mode. A fun game made somewhat annoying by some overly difficult moments. I still say this is a "must" until GOD OF WAR III comes out ... and that seems to be a far way off

    John Woo Presents STRANGLEHOLD
Yet another game that you can get on the PS3 or the XboX 360. I don't own this game but plan to buy it. Last I checked you can get it for $29.99 for the PS3 so ... I did play the PS3 DEMO and damn it was fun fun fun. Some have said it is a MAX PAYNE clone but I managed to never play those games and MAX PAYNE was a John Woo rip-off anyways so ... I say try the DEMO and see what you think. For $29.99 I think it would be worth it based on the DEMO. I'll probably be buying this sooner than later myself.

ELDER SCROLLS IV: OBLIVION [GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION]
I'm a RPG fan. Every since the "early" years of Wizardry and Ultima and Bard's Tale etc. and OBLIVION is sheer joy to play. The graphics are amazing. The music kicks ass. The game play is great although combat can get "hairy" at times but damn this game is almost worth the price of admission for a PS3 unit. Granted you can play it on a XboX 360 but the PS3 version is superior in graphics and game play (especially "load" times) and while a very expensive computer graphics card can do as good if not better (for those that have the computer version) I doubt they enjoy playing it as much as I do since I get to play it on my couch in comfort on a 1080i 51" 16x9 HDTV
This game is the reason why I've yet to finish UNCHARTED which is probably the best PS3 game ... next to this.

These are the games that I have or have tried that were "stand outs" to me. Of course there are many I haven't tried yet ... I really want HEAVENLY SWORD for instance. I should point out I got MOTORSTORM for free in my PS3 package and I guess the game is "fun enough" for what it is but I'm not impressed by it. I suppose it doesn't help that I can never win a race LOL

Make sure you download as many DEMOS as you can since that will give you an idea of the game play. Everyone seems to rave about RESISTANCE FALL OF MAN but I was not impressed by it at all. Thankfully the DEMO kept me from what would have been a "bad" purchase for me. However it could just be me ... after DOOM III I've been unexcited about "first person shooters". I get the "been there done that" feeling. DOOM III to me was the last of a breed now long gone and filled with stupid "army" type games or "squad based" games ... neither of which are my cup of tea. Put me in a (mostly) confined creepy area with a big pink muscle thing and a miniature with a flamethrower for an arm thing and some spider looking things and THAT to me is a first person shooter DONE RIGHT. I may eventually pick up THE ORANGE BOX but none of the first person shooters out now do anything for me.

In re-cap you need UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE and BURNOUT PARADISE. Get OBLIVION if you haven't played it yet elsewhere. Wait with baited breath for RESIDENT EVIL V
