Software Dist Service 3.0

Hi,

Microsoft have very kindly forced the following security update onto my computer - Software Distribution Service 3.0 - and its not only switched off my firewall, but also stops me connecting to the internet (I'm using a local library at present).

I've used System Restore six times now, and the update is still there. How do I remove or modify it so I can play on line?

Have you tried going to add/remote programs. Checking Show updates and seeing if you can manually remote it.

Yep, system restore just goes home, and your system is basically hosed.

Basically if your running a third party firewall product, uninstall it, reboot, try internet access through browser, reinstall third party firewall ... or check third party firewall vendor for patch.

It would appear to be an IE update is causing problems, KB944533

Control panel, add/remove programs, check box to show ms updates, uninstall any update related to IE that has been installed since this first appeared ... there is some confusion as to what this update is actually known by in name.

Go to windows explorer, tools, folder options, view tab
Hidden files and folders (check to show)
Uncheck (hide extensions)
Uncheck (hide protected operating system)
Answer yes
Apply, then ok

Now

Go to windows directory

Delete everything contained within the folder > prefetch

Go to folder $hf_mig$, and locate problem KB, and only delete the KB's that match those that were uninstalled via add/remove programs.

Go to folder > SoftwareDistribution, download

Browse each folder, and look at file names matching KB's that match those that were uninstalled, when located, delete that whole folder.

Thats everything in windows explorer covered.

Now

Set ms updates to download and notify only... do not install
Keep an eye out for that windows update yellow shield task tray icon.
When it says updates are ready for install, click it to bring the update install window up.
Select custom only.
Uncheck KB944533
When asked, say NO

It should then say it will never bother you about this update again, and this should prevent it from being installed in the future.

I used to track these updates and problems, but I just don't have the time no more.

As a final suggestion, determine when this first appeared, and as a suggestion, attack ALL updates installed for the month involved ... this will help you to determine which one is the actual problem, and identify it correctly.

sds 3.0 isn't a security update. it's the program that downloads the updates. there was probably an update it downloaded after it's install that is the problem.

what firewall? sygate perhaps? most are really still running even if they aren't in the tray. there might have been an update to internet explorer and your firewall is blocking it because it isn't on the allowed list yet with the update. try to get a copy of firefox and install it so you will have a browser to get on the net with.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. I called MS and was walked through a few of your suggestions. I had to go to Safe Mode and then System Restore, turn off the Auto Updates and , here I am back online! I don't like having the Auto Updates turned off, but it does mean I can play with my computer.
