vob to avi using alltoavi (problem)

Hi.

I gather from the alltoavi website, and videohelp.com that alltoavi is suitable for converting vob files to avi. I have been using autogk (yes, I'm a newbie to this), but it's quite slow (3 hours coverting 1.3mb vob file to avi), so I thought I'd give alltoavi a go (I saw somewhere that it's quicker). Anyway, when I drop a vob into the GUI, I get an error message.

Looking around other sites, I see that most people use alltoavi for converting mkv files. Is there a known issue with alltoavi converting vob? ...or am I mistaken in thinking it's suitable for vob to avi conversion?

When all else fails, use a different tool. Take a look in the HOW TO: Convert section to get a list of tools/guides.

For what it's worth, I recommend autoGK. Of all the DVD to avi conversion tools I've tried so far, it has the best quality. Simply queue up a job (or several jobs) and let it run at night or while you are at work.

If I can ask. Why do you want to convert?
If it is for editing, there are Mpeg editors available.

anlaoch it would be helpful if you could provide some pc specs ... belarc advisor can help you with determining pc spec info.

Tinker: The reason for converting is that in order to edit clips from my hdd dvd recorder (Ellion 950S), on my pc, I have to convert it to divx or xvid as these are the only formats the Ellion will accept back onto the hdd.

FWIW, I have used AlltoAVI to convert mkv and VOBs to Xvid, and while the fies looked OK and played fine on the PC, none of them would play on my standalones.

Try avi.NET instead, if AutoGK is too slow, but on your system you will be in for a wait regardless of the tool used.
