I have a Canon HV20. Can anyone recommend a good HDV capture software and minimum h/w reqmts to capture and burn DVDs at home. I am using a Dell Dimension 8200 with 2.2 GHz CPU (533 MHz bus), 40 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM, IEEE 1394 card, 8X DVD writer and Windows XP Home. In addition to more RAM what else might I need?

I can help with the first two bits.
Hardware requirements for capturing are the same as for DV so you are OK there.
You can capture HDV using VLC. I created and submitted a How-To guide (which for some odd reason hasn't appeared in the list...). You can read it here:

I used Sony Vegas 7 to capture. It's better if you have two HDD's; one to run the software and the other to capture to. Your PC might work better if it was a bit faster, but it will probably do. 40 GB can get filled pretty quickly unless you're deleting the captured files after creating your DVD files.
