  1. Ok, I swear to god, im not a complete moron, even though im starting to feel like one.

Ok, im trying to add borders to an avi file. The compression is Xvid, and the audio is LameMP3. Ok, I know that I have to re-encode the file to add my borders. So, I do my output settings as Video:Xvid, and Audio: LameMP3. I set my filter to add my borders and it previews ok, and everything looks good. When I start up it prompts me to build the time map, and unpack the bitstream.

When my conversion is done, it doesnt show up associated with any of my media players. However, if I select a player from a drop down menu, it will play the file. None of my other video editing software will recognize the file though. Im really not sure whats happening. Ive used similar software before, and never had the compatability problems I seem to be having now.........is there some obvious step im missing? Im still thinking this must be user error somehow.

Any ideas from the very, very, kind video pros on here

    Thanks in advance.

First, if you aren't changing the audio, keep it set to Copy, which is the same as Direct Stream Copy in virtualdub. It will stop needless re-encoding.

Second, AVI Demux does not append file extensions when you save. You have to remember to do this yourself (e.g. mymove.AVI). Otherwise Windows doesn't know what software is needed to play the clip.

  3. Go to My Computer. Select Tools -> Foler Options. Go to the View tab. Scroll down the Advanced Settings list and turn off the "Hide extensions for known file types" option. Now you can see filename extensions so you'll know whether files have them or not. How Microsoft thinks anyone could deal with Windows with that option enabled is beyond me.

It is turned off to avoid stupid-user syndrome. I used to turn it on when I ran up a new machine because it annoys me when it is off by default. Except that when it is off, users cannot append past or over the extension (yes, I know they get a warning - but these are stupid users), so now I keep them hidden unless I need to see them.

  5. Well, gunslingers tip fixed my problem. All I had to do was name the file .avi, and problem solved. Thats the first software that ive ever had to do that with though.

Thanks for the help all, and gunslinger, your a prince among men.

Thanks, but it is just experience. I suspect that this is a throw back to AVI Demux's Linux heritage, where file extensions are not the way files are identified by default.
