I used Virtualdub two or three weeks ago to clean up and improve some video files and it worked great. When I tried to use the program last night, there was no video, just audio. At first I thought it was the file but I tried several files that I know are OK and the same thing happens. The strange thing is that when I press the Stop button, I see video in both panes, still, of course. But as soon as I press the arrow key to start the video again, the same thing happens except that the still frame remains in the right pane but but the left pane goes black. There have been no hardware changes or major software changes in my system, so I'm puzzled as to what's going on.

SYSTEM: Windows XP Home, Asus A7V600 with AMD Athlon XP 2700+, GeForce4 MX 4000, 1 GB RAM, PVR-250, Benq DW1655.

  2. Try changing the state of Options -> Allow Video Overlays. You may need to exit and restart the program.

    Jagabo,

Already had "allow video overlays" chosen, so that isn't the problem. This is really puzzling since it affects any file I open in Virtualdub, files that work perfectly in other apps.

  4. I didn't say enable video overlays, I said change its state. Since it's on, try turn it off.

You should also try different Video -> Color Depth settings. Also, under Options -> Preferences -> Display try the different settings.

See what happens when you hit F9 and F10 on your keyboard as the video plays.

Well, guys, looks like we've solved the problem. I disabled video overlays and everything seems to be fine now. I'll play a few more files just to be sure. But that seems to have been the problem. Thanks for that tip Jagabo. I tried the F9 and F10 keys but they made no difference.

    Thanks all.

It's not really a fix, it's a workaround. Do you have the same problem with media players? There are many benefits to using video overlay including lower CPU load, hardware scaling, no colorspace conversion, video proc amp settings separate from the desktop, etc. If you are having the same problem with media players then you should be looking at fixing the overlay function, not avoiding it. This usually just involves fiddling with the graphics card's setup applet. You may have to update your video drivers.

I have the same issue currently.

While going through the process, I can see the output previewed. But when it's done and I go to look at it, Windows Media won't do anything, whereas Media Player Classic will play it and I can hear sound, but no video.

Messing with video overlay settings does nothing.

Ok, I tried making it a different file format and that worked, so it must be something with my x264vfw file.

  9. Did you do only the first pass of a multi-pass encode?

Do you have a DirectShow decoder for h264? Set h264 to "libavcodec" in the ffdshow configuration.

Vdub uses vfw, so if h264 is enabled in the vfw configuration but disabled in the regular DirectShow configuration, this would explain your results

You can also try playing back in VLC, KMPlayer, or SMPlayer - all which have codecs/splitters included

    Thanks for the responses, guys.

You got it. I was following a tutorial and I completely missed the part about the nth pass that was necessary. Completely my fault as I am very impatient as times. Went back and did it right.

I really love this forum and you guys!

    Thanks again.
