You're at a store and the total comes to $9.52. You hand over a $10 bill and the cahier procedes to hand youd $10.08 cents back out of the register.
What do you do and why?

Is this at BestBuy, Sams/Walmart or a Gas station?

I don't know about what I would do, but what I did do when it happened to me was that I laughed and smiled at the cashier and pointed out that I only gave her a $10 bill. My guess is that I would do the same thing if it ever happened again.
Edit: I just reread the dollar amounts. My experience was that she gave me correct change for a $20 even though I handed her a $10. In your example, the cashier really screwed up, because the change being offered is 40 cents off from the correct change for the wrong bill. If the cash register's math screwed it up and the cashier was handing me what the register said, the I would help her count out the correct change (which no-one behind a counter seems to be able to do any more), then I would suggest that she better call her manager and advise him that there's a problem with the computer."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard

to be honest, I'd probably stuff it in my pocket and walk away.
I just don't pay that much attention, unfortunately.
They could short-change me and I probably wouldn't even realize it.
In your example, I'd find an extra $10 in my pocket later that day and wonder where the hell it came from..."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

it depends on the cashier.
If it's a young girl, and she seems nice - give her the money back, you heartless b@stard.
If it's a young lady, and she's good looking - offer to give her the money back, or tell her you can keep it and take her out to eat later. When she says it's not enough to eat on, tell her it is if you cook for her.
If it's an older lady, and she reminds you of your grand mother - give her the money back.
If SHE is in anyway, b!tchy, has no patience, or reminds you of a bad ex-girlfriend/wife - keep the money.
If the cashier is a guy - keep the money, his dumb@ss needs to get a real job.
If the cashier doesn't speak english - keep the money, I call that a "interpreter" charge. -
I'm just asking. I'm the type that gives the money back without even thinking about it. No matter how much it is then only LATER is like "man... I could have kept that cash"

I probably wouldn't notice and suspect I've been short-changed as often as I received too much change.
If I did notice, it would depend on the situation (variables):
Did this mistake occur at a store I frequent?
Has this store short-changed me in the past?
Did this mistake occur at a "Mom & Pop" shop?
Was the cashier cute and/or friendly?
What was my financial situation at the time?
Was the product I purchased manufactured by Microsoft? -
I would hand back the money, because when cashiers give back too much change, they are supporting terrorism.
If you don't believe that is the correct answer, then why do you hate our freedom?

Here's another question. Select the correct answer from the three choices:
1. to (used for expressing motion or direction toward a point, person, place, or thing approached and reached, as opposed to from): They came to the house.
2. too to an excessive extent or degree; beyond what is desirable, fitting, or right: too sick to travel.
3. two a cardinal number, 1 plus 1 equals two. -
If you choose two, then I too, choose to select two, even if it's not excessive.

BTW, who the hell still carries cash these days?

I'm kind of with northcat_8 on this - not so much what the clerk looks like but the attitude.
I would probably say something like "Are you sure?" and see what the reply is - if they see the mistake they can correct it but if I get something like "yes it's f'n correct" then I'd keep it. -

On a similar note: How many have had a bill for (say) 92 cents and you give them $1.17 and they don't have a clue why?

I like giving them odd change amounts.
Like if it comes up to $7.28, I'll give them $8.16
I'm a math teacher, the complexity of that problem for most is very disappointing -
And what if someone gives you a foreign coin as change? Do you keep it or give it back and ask for "real" money?
-
I'd give it back.
I had this happen to me but it wa other way around. Was around Christmas time, stores were packed. I gave the clerk a $50 and she gave me change for a $20. I told her and with a big attitude says "No you did not!" . She opens the drawer and sure enough sitting on top of 20's is a $50. Didn't really care that it happened, its mistake anyone could make especially if you're handling money all day long, wasn't too happy about the attitude though. -

Not a "Shortchanged" story but something like it.
I was at Denny's having dinner ( I just love the place) with my family and the waitress brought me the check. I knew that it had to be something around $30 (My 2 daughters are still kids and they eat for free on Saturdays), but the check said $16 and I was only being charged for a sandwich and coffee.
If you haven't been to a Denny's before, once you receive the check you can just go to the front door and pay to the cashier before leaving, so basically I was receiving a 50% off my check as it was.
I felt bad for her because it was going to be noticed later (Yeah, I thought about paying the $16 and leave) and since I'm kind of a regular there I just called her and pointed the mistake.
She went away to the register and called her manager and the two of them were discussing something and then they both approach me... Excuse me Sir, but it seems that someone else paid your tab!.... lol ... this must be your lucky day.
So I just had to pay the $16 and got my meal heavily discounted.1f U c4n r34d 7h1s, U r34lly n33d 2 g3t l41d!!! -

Not sure how they would give $10.08 back instead of $10.48 to make the mistake more feasible. Trick question? Maybe it's done on purpose to test your intelligence or your honesty?
Learn from this though: I use to hang out at an arcade years ago. Went to make change of $5 for quarters. Got back $10 in quarters accidentally. Corrected the cashier telling her I was overchanged.
Let me tell you after that day I was always her favorite. Free games, free food, all kinds of benefits. Every member of her family running the business loved me after that for my "honesty". It was the best place I hung around in for years.
Think of potential long term benefits if that ever happens. Return the money. It's an investment. Trust me.I hate VHS. I always did. -
Yeah my post contains some bad math! sheesh people I type stuff between phone calls fast as I can. Okay okay I get it the math is bad!
