What's the best software to edit .MKV contained videos?

like the title says

I need a software that can cut/join vids and supports .MKV videos.

VirtualDubMod doesn't work so don't tell me to get that, I've already tried it, it gives me a bunch of errors when I load the video

It depends on what video & audio codecs are being used inside the .mkv, but avidemux is about the only one that supports .mkv container.

Make sure you cut on keyframes, and to join videos they have to be the same specifications (especially dimensions)

Avidemux has audio sync issues while editing HD video, specially H264 or MPEG4/AVC.
If you want to join the edited video clips, for proper audio sync you have to either re-recode the video or atleast the audio.
Hence, forget DTS audio as Avidemux does not support DTS audio encoding. Also, even for AC3 it doesn't support more than 384 Kbps which also very low when it comes to HQ sound for a very good Hi Def A/V content.
However, if you are OK with the above limitations, it is indeed the best video editor I've used and it's free!

You can use MKVmerge to join or append mkv files, they probably have to have the same bit rates etc

Actually, since most a/v streams use veriable bit rates anyway, it probably doesn't matter what the bit rate is. Of course, there are other factors such as format and resolution to consider.

As far as editing goes, I recommend the original virtual dub with a separate mkv plugin. You can find a good one here. I've used it many times, so I know it kicks butt.

After MUCH searching I think I found the answer. There is some free software called AVI Trimmer + MKV 2.0. It doesn't re-encode, is very fast, and includes a visual editor (like VideoReDo). I just did a writeup on my experience last night with it and download links:
