I've been trying a couple - Any Video Encoder and EasyFLV. AVC gives a lot of control over audio - various variable bitrate profiles, has batch encoding which is nice but it's buggy and undependable, change some parameter - audio or video bitrate, frame rate, image dimension you may get no image.

EasyFLV works more consistently but doesn't do batch encoding and generally gives you less control over the audio.

Both of them have preset video bitrates that don't allow precise control if you're trying to use the "add black" trick to nudge up against the 350kbps tripwire to avoid YouTube re-encoding.

Is there an app that's non-buggy and gives more precise control? Free is of course good.

    Thanks for all input.

Although WinFF uses presets for flv, it offers the option to override those preset parameters and enter some of your own settings. But it does not have an "add black" function.

you can use Avanti to convert to flv, you can control the values o f video/audio and add black bars

or you can use the mencoder script provided by 45tripp in the youtube thread, it will automatically add the black bars( its what i use).
I love it when a plan comes together!

Thanks, I'll definitely check it out. By "add black" I'm referring to the trick of appending a low bitrate/no audio flv segment of black to the original flv to lower the average bitrate of the entire segment so YouTube will let it pass by without re-encoding.

Hey 1000 thanks...at least. This is *exactly* the kind of thing I was looking for. Among other things, it lets me cut the bit rate of that dummy video section down to nothing.
