I was trying to download a divX movie from darksidethemovie.com and it was downloading at that speed. WITH DSL!!! What?!? I've been trying at different intervals throughout the day and still the same. So what exactly am I paying $40.00 a month for again?

  3. Most likely, it's one of these:

    1. The download site is overloaded.

    or

    2. One (or more) of the hops along the way is overloaded.

EDIT: I went and tried that site and the movie download....it's not you or your ISP that is at fault, that site is just SLOOOOOW.

one of the lies about DSL is that it's dedicated

sometimes the connections at the phone company can be overloaded.

and DSL degrads the farther u get from the POP.

    Cable rules though.

It slows down sometimes around 6-8 but i can bring data in at 1.4 megs

    (fast ethernet connection to modem)

I spike sometimes on small downloads and can get 2.5meg a sec if the file is only like 2.5meg. As for server action I run between 50 and 200kb per sec. DSL sucks air like a fish on the beach! I had the worst...Verizon DSL (start the pity party). That was before I moved from one state to another. I now have the cable modem and I live in a city of old people so no bandwidth problems on my block! Actually, the other day somebody from Verizon called and wanted me to try the DSL side by side with the cable and I said no. The lady was so persistant that I had to hang up on her before I think she got the message. As for benchmarks I usually benchmark the T1 level. Anyway...just bragging.
    Facetious? Me? No...never.

  6. i've got dsl and it's not uncommon for me to go 175... on a long download and forget the 6-8 thing... i guess it depend on alot more things than that... (i've gone up to 250 but that only lasted about 10 seconds...)

My ISP never said my 1Mb DSL was dedicated, but some unethical ISPs do. All in all, I'm happy with the performance.

If you want dedicated, GUARANTEED bandwidth, 24 hours a day, 7 days a weeks, you have to pay out the dirt-chute for it!
