    Do most DVD players play WMV/A files?

    Most DVD players? Nope. Many newer ones offer that feature, but it is not standard on most DVD players, AFAIK.

    So if you were to put a WMV file on a blank DVD, the player wont read it?

    most players used to read mpeg-1 written as vcd on a cd. not an mpeg-1 file copied to a cd. i'd guess most still play vcds but very few vcds are made because of the very poor quality of the video specs.

    MPEG-1/2 authored as DVD-Video: yes;

    MPEG-1/2 authored as VCD: probably;

    MPEG-1/2 authored as SVCD: possibly;

    MPEG-1/2 in a data CD/DVD: depends.

    if you take that mpeg-1 and author it to a vcd with something like vcdeasy and burn to a cd then most players should handle it.

    Apologies. I had ignored the fact that the OP lives in the United States.
