Ok I spent about 15 bucks to set everything up and I think I did something wrong (i think its the PCI card I am using) Here is the equipment I have.

    Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8240HDC

    This PCI card

    And a 6-pin firewire

The OS i am running is Windows XP home edition

And I am using Cap-DVHS to capture the video

I have set everything up right and I am still not able to record more than 2 minutes of HD. Also I am not able to record live TV either. If you know the problem please help me

ps. I am thinking of buying this firewire PCI card is it good?

You don't need a PCI card to do this, so whether the card works or not it's irrelevant. Take it out of the equation and record directly from your cable box to your PC via firewire. The results are a lot better. Look here:

for info on the driver you need.

I don't recommend buying this kind of thing on Ebay anyway. Too many shady dealers who may be selling you knock-offs or equipment that's not completely working. It's not worth saving the money this way if what you get doesn't work. Keep that in mind.

Yikes! Sorry, can't help you then.

You may need to find a dedicated forum for your card. I'll warn you that capturing HD via cards is very tricky and I switched to the firewire method for that very reason. You'd be better served to junk the card and get a Firewire/USB card PCI card instead and use that. Less problems, more likely to work correctly quickly.

superdud1400, start with filling in your pc's profile

Second, identify the motherboard and include information regarding addon cards, and in which slots they are installed into, so that hardware conflicts caused by sharing resources can be ruled out.

There is no problem with either of those two cards you posted links to.

As for the limit, the drive receiving data, what format is it in ?

Camera's connected via ieee are easy, but your talking about "Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8240HDC"

You might get better information from http://www.avsforum.com, in relation to recording from such devices.

Ok I am not sure what things you are asking for but here is what my system info is

    superdud14 - Windows XP has been running 22mins 43secs Memory Usage: 525/1022MB (51.33%) Processor: 1-Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz, 2593MHz, 520KB HDD Free Space: (C: 3729MB/37.18GB) (D: 476833MB/465.76GB) (F: 11200MB/74.53GB) (G: CDROM)

I am saving to a NTFS formatted hard drive and I am running Windows XP home edition

I have my PCI card plugged into my first pci slot and the rest of them that are plugged in are a video capture card, Sound card, and a Wireless internet card.

I am not sure whats up with it so if anyone knows please tell me.

  9. Do you have access to a regular DV camcorder or an HDV camcorder that can output as DV? If so, hook that up to the card and see if Windows recognizes it. If it does, try capturing using Windows Movie Maker to see if you can get more than two minutes. If everything works, then it suggests an issue with your software rather than the card.

A somewhat obsure but real possibility would be that a screensaver or someother change in video display mode is causing the capture process to stop/restart. If you have any power saving options enabled, turn them off to see.
