I have several MP3s each having different volume. When I listen to them through my iPod, I have to keep on adjusting the volume. Is there any free software out there which can make all of them have the same volume level? Your help is much appreciated.

Almost every recording software come with "Normalizer" option for your tracks.
That will adjust volume to be even.
Has to be done during conversion, before downloading to iPod.

Audacity will do it as well and it's a great program to have in your toolbox as well.

Not hard to learn at all just looks intimidating.

I never understood the "normalize" option. It makes ZERO sense to me.
That will adjust volume to be even....even with what?

Get a few files and apply a normalise, see for yourself.

Some simple-minded normalising can mess up files though. Some just look for the maximum volume and then scale the whole file to bring that down to a standard value, without clipping. But if you have a soundtrack with some explosions, gunfire; or classical music with some big drums, this will make most of the track too quiet.

I find the Replaygain algorithm, as used by MP3Gain, to give good results. Whenever I'm making an episode compilation I use it to analyse the sound of each file and then adjust them accordingly (AmplifydB() in the AVS files, since I process audio via these). Then I don't have to slide the volume control up or down between videos.

After they are MP3'd or during the process? Which music file of the
"few" that I choose will be the volume model for the others?
Why is that particular file chosen?
We are back to my original question....compared to/even with WHAT?

    Before and after, obviously.
Load them into Audacity or MP3DirectCut, or similar apps that display the waveform and you can see, and hear, exactly what is gong on.

I linked to a page explaining the process, with links to as much detail as you want. Why not read it.

If you have a good audio editing software it will adjust volume to a certain dB level, but not exceeding set value.
AsAlanHK mention, I would not use it on classical music, because you will loose dynamic range, but for pop and on top mp3 it is no problem, because the music is just loud.
