Hello,
I am using MpegStreamclip to edit a short video (6 minutes). MpegStreamclip is available at:
https://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPEG_StreamClip
I would like to export the final video to a DVD so it will be playable on a DVD player.
Which steps would I take to export it to DVD?
I have already purchased and installed Apple's QuickTimeT Mpeg-2 Codec (its about $30). I thought that was a necessary addition to have.
The problem is when I go to export the final video, under the file menu, the "convert to MPEG" option is grayed out. Likewise the "convert to TS" and the "Demux" option are all grayed out. Is this a sign of a problem with my MpegStreamclip program or that perhaps MpegStreamclip can't seem to find the QuickTimeT Mpeg-2 Codec?
Why would these features by grayed out?
(The file I had open was a .mov file.)
How do you export to a DVD? Which "export to" option do you choose?
Thank you for any suggestions,
(I am using OS 10.4 Tiger on my G3 blue and white 350 MHz mac.)

Oops. One correction with my last post:
I meant to write:
"QuickTime Mpeg-2 Codec"
(rather than QuickTimeT Mpeg-2 Codec) -
You already asked virtually the same question in your previous thread. It's not a big deal, but you ought to have bumped your old thread instead of starting a new one, to keep things more organized.
I am a PC user, so I can't give you specific program recommendations, but you need a program to author your clip (to create the additional files needed for a playable DVD), and possibly a separate program to actually burn the DVD disk.
Look in the tools section under "MacOS Video Tools". -
hey tealgrey...
what format is the video you are trying to convert
in MpegStreamclip to DVD?
Is it a Quicktime .mov file or an .avi file?
what codecs are used in the file?
I have only seen MpegStreamclip flip out on mpeg-1 files like this."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

When I'm not here, Where can I be found?

You cannot export files from MPEG Streamclip to DVD compatible format /MPEG2/ since that app is not the MPEG encoder.

SERBIAN is correct. To get mpeg2 output from MPEG Streamclip, you need to have imported mpeg2 video to start, perhaps as a VOB or VRO file. Even if you have mpeg2 video to start with, all it can do is edit it. MPEG Streamclip doesn't author or burn DVD's.
I skimmed your original thread when you first posted it, since I don't use a Mac. I just looked at your original thread again. It's hard to tell. but I think you started with DV. I didn't see that you converted it to mpeg2 at any point. You could do that to your clip now. It will be faster than converting the video you originally imported into MPEG Streamclip. Quality of the resulting video will depend on what video format the clip is now.
ffmpegX came up in you previous thread. From the info at the download website, ffmpegX looks like it will accept a lot of different types of video, convert to them mpeg2 video, and author it for you as well. Looks like you need an additional program to burn your authored video to a DVD. -
Sorry about this late response. Thank you kindly everyone for all these suggestions.
I am working with a .mov file. It is a quicktime file that came from iMovie. Actually, any file I open, whether it is an AVI, DV or .MOV file doesn't seem to be able to be converted to MPEG in MpegStreamclip - the "export to MPEG" option is "grayed out".
As I wrote earlier, I went out and purchased Apple's QuickTime Mpeg-2 Codec (about $30) thinking that MpegStreamclip would need it to enable the feature of exporting to Mpeg-2. No such luck - export to MEPG and "Convert to TS" is still grayed out.
And so, instead, I am using "Burn" (from http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/).
Burn converts the .mov file (or a .DV file) to an mpg file (.mpg). This is probably an Mpeg-2 file. Burn also creates the necessary audio_TS files and the video_TS files ready to burn to the DVD. MpegStreamclip doesn't seem to do any of this for me and so that is why I am using "Burn" (from http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/) instead.
I just thought it would be nice if MpegStreamclip could export to Mpeg-2 and create the necessary audio_TS files and the video_TS files ready to burn to a video DVD. Then I could so everything in MpegStreamclip and not need to use "Burn" (from http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/). This would save me a step.
Anyways, I will have to leave it at that. If anyone knows any answers to this feel free to post some suggestions anytime. For now I will have to rely on "Burn" (from http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/) for the "export to MPG" features.
Thanks again! -
PS I created a new post because my old post started to divert from its original question and I felt it was starting to become a completely new topic. So, I started a new post.

No, the Mpeg 2 component is more of a playback component for mpeg streamclip. Please read the online help, you cannot convert in that program to Mpeg 2 from DV. Mpeg2 is not a good format for editing, and tpically, editing is done in other formats. The burner converts to MPEG2. Typically, there is little other use for mpeg2.
Burn is one of many choices, I mentioned others. Many of the DVD author programs will take your iMovie file and write a DVD, the "additional step" may be built in, or, it may truly be a separate step, but, no matter what, it HAS to be done.
Mpeg Streamclip is more of a editor that a format converter, though it can do some of those. Freeware is ffmpeg or mpeg2enc if you just want to convert, or numerous other programs. ffmpegx is shareware and provides a gui. But really, I just use a burn program, Toast.
Mpeg2 Works 4 is also a good conversion program.Steve
