Now that I've successfully upgraded to Win XP , I'm curious about where the "paging file" (virtual memory) is located. In Win 98SE it was named WIN386.SWP, located under the root directory, but I don't find that file name anywhere in XP --does it use a different file name? Just wondering.

  2. It's in the root directory and named pagefile.sys.

This is the default. You can change the location or have more than one.

You may also have a hiberfil.sys file in the root that is used for hibernation.

  3. You might not be able to "see" it if you are using default settings because "hide protected operating system files" is usually checked by default (in the folder options, view tab, advanced settings)

Yes, thanks. I found it after unchecking the "hide protected operating system files" box. I was curious about the location because I changed the paging file location to be on my second hard drive, but didn't see it there by exploring that drive, and I wasn't sure why (not that Windows would lie about a thing like that). But, for some reason, a search for the 'pagefile.sys' file won't get a result, even when the "hide protected OS files" box is unchecked -- wonder why that is?

"Search Companion" must be allowed to look for hidden/system files and folders.

Thanks -- that did it. I didn't realize that advanced option was there. But, you'd think Windows would automatically search for "hidden" files when the appropriate 'folders options/view' boxes are unchecked, without having to also go into the search/advanced options menu. Belt and suspenders mentality, maybe?
