I have a TV that cuts off the sides of my AVIs/DIVXs when I play them with my DVD player. I cannot narrow the picture from the TV, it is very old. What is the easiest/best way to fix an AVI so that the whole picture fits on the screen? A thick black border? If so, is there any way to do it without re-encoding the entire file? I'm a total newbie to encoding. Thanks.

    Yes.

It'll have to be completely reencoded.

  3. Or you could get a new TV that has a no-overscan option.

OK. Is VirtualDub the easiest, then? I tried re-encoding my file with VD but I couldn't get the file anywhere near the target file size. I'm using the XviD codec.

  5. File size = bitrate * running time

Use a bitrate similar to the source.

Interesting, I didn't know they had TVs with this option.

It's mostly on 1080p HDTVs. Samsung calls is "Just Scan" (each pixel of a 1920x1080 source is mapped 1:1 with a pixel on the display).
