Got some PAL dvds that I want to convert to NTSC.
I've googled for help and can't seem to find something that will work.
That... or I messing up the steps when I try to convert.
I tried Shrink and Decrypter and that didn't work.
I tried IFOedit and got nothing there also.
One of the dvd players I'm using is at least 6-7 yrs old. The other player is maybe 1-2 yrs old.
Any suggestions or tips?
I just want the easiest and quickest way to do this.
thanx

Unless your spare is absolutely worthless to you (unfortunately, there are such people here) and you only have to do this to 1 or 2 DVDs, it really is NOT worth the time and effort to do this kind of conversion on an ongoing basis. You'd be much better off to just buy a converting DVD player that can convert PAL output to NTSC. If you're watching your budget, Philips makes a variety of DVD players that can do this, but there are better players if you can pay more, such as Oppo. If you don't mind spending hours doing this for each DVD because your spare time is worthless, then use VOB2MPG and FAVC as Baldrick suggests.

I wish it was only 1-2 DVDs I had to convert. No, I have 16 DVDs that need converting.
I do have a Philips upscaling DVD player that plays these dvds no problem.
The problem starts when I have family/friends ask me to make them a copy of these DVDs and they don't have a DVD player that will play them.
I thought that Decrypter and Shrink would do the trick but I guess I was wrong. That or like I mentioned earlier, I did something wrong while trying to convert.
I guess I can give these two new options a shot and see what happens. -
Really I agree with jman98. The easiest thing is go just get a dvd player (even a cheap one) which can play pal formated disc.
If you do want to convert them you are only going to be able to do the main movie. You will lose all menus and extras unless you spend an awful lot of time and effort demuxing everything and then putting it all together again. AFAIK there is no one click software that can take a whole (menus and all) pal dvd and output ntsc.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -
If these are commercial discs then we can't really help you, as making copies for other people is outside the rules of the forum. I can only suggest that if your friends want copies of your DVDs that they buy their own, preferably in NTSC format. This is also save you a lot of unnecessary work.
Read my blog here.

These aren't commerical discs. Old VHS tapes that were converted to DVDs in PAL format.
I really don't care about losing menus or xtras.
I just want the main movie or file to be converted.
I'll try the two suggested programs and see what happens. -
Family is one thing, but I am not kidding when I say to tell your friends the DVDs are in PAL and unless they have a DVD player that can play them, they are out of luck. There is no way I would let myself get suckered into doing this for friends. It's good that you don't care about losing menus because we forgot to tell you that this will happen as a result of the PAL->NTSC conversion process. My advice would be to get out of as much as you can. Perhaps you shouldn't have shown the videos to other people in the first place so they wouldn't ask you for copies.

Yeah maybe lettting them know I had these dvds was not a good idea.
I guess I was thinking converting was going to be easy.
Couldn't have been more wrong. -
Actually, the OP has a DVD player that can play PAL disc to NTSC, so he's already got half the job done. Take the DVD player and hook it up to an NTSC DVD recorder. Push play on the DVD player, record on the DVD recorder. When the disc is done playing, finalize on the DVD recorder. You now have an NTSC version of the PAL DVD. Need more than one copy? Pop the NTSC DVD into the computer, rip, and burn.
That's the fastest way to do the conversion.

Anyone know if there is a region free hack out there for my DVD player?
Have a Panny RP56.

hey i'm with jman98, tell your family and friends to go out and get a different DVD player. I have a Toshiba SD 4980 i bought a 1 1/2 ago , it plays PAL, Dvix and everything else. It has upconverting to 1080i, component video output and HDMI output and progressive scan. I payed $50 CDN at a liquidation store so its a refurbished item BUT i've have yet to have a problem with it and don't care if i do now because i've had it long enough and it's payed for itself. I'm from Canada and i don't know if you folks in the USA have XSCARGO but thats where i got mine. Most GOOD liquidation stores offer extended warrenty on refurb items these day. Refurb can sometimes be better because the usually send back to MFG or whoever and if the problem is "IT JUST STOPPED WORKING " then they do a complete check of the item before it goes to re-sale. Also check the liquidation outlets that handle re-sale items for Costco. Anyways Toshiba is a fairly good name and i like that they play PAL.
Thanks -

CogoSWSDS' suggestion is certainly doable if you have a DVD recorder. While it's not the way I would go because I am a quality freak, I have seen the results of people who did this very thing and it looked a lot better than I expected it to look. It was OK.
I still think you should tell your friends that you can only give them a PAL DVD and if they can't play it, too bad - so sad - sucks to be you. Giving them a DVD that they can't play is one sure way to get out of having to do this again. People have no problem imposing on you when they don't have to do the work. And you know what really sucks? I bet that out of all the people who told you that they want a copy of your DVDs, you'll be very lucky if even one of them actually watches it after you make it for them. I bet almost nobody you give these to will bother watching them.
