Canopus ADVC, ADS Pyro or similar.

Macs are set up for DV format over Firewire.

if self recorded (from cable) then just a canopus or pyro will be ok.

if commercially released vhs, you will also need
    a Macrovision busting box,
    known as a "video stabilizer".

  5. if you have a dvd recorder you can use that with a "video stabilizer" and not have to use the computer at all...

My eyetv 250 converts macrovision tapes.

I don't know if the eyetv 250 plus does as well.

If anyone else know I would like to know because I am thinking of upgrading
