Newbie using the program... was trying to convert a 691MB DIVX AVI file (2-hour movie) into an MPEG1. I noticed after a few hours of video showing up, it was doing conversion on a black screen - was this for audio? Anyway, the program stopped after a few hours with an error and I found out that it has run out of harddrive space. I try to play back what is already converted and notice the file is currently 1.96GB! I do see the VIDEO only in the converted file, but there's no sound and half of the file is just black screen. DOes the program need the 'buffer' space to do the audio conversion also? Would it have cut out the black screen part on its own if I did have enough diskspace?

I don't know why you are having trouble with the black screen but anytime you convert Divx to VCD, the file size will more than double. Divx is mpeg 4 and so mpeg 1 doesn't have near the compression.

Interesting... I set DirectMedia higher in the priority list, then loaded up a VCD template that came with the program and an initial encoding session seems to work with sound. I only did the first minute of the file, so I don't know what will happen after it's all done, but it says it should only take 3.5 hours instead of 8.
Still concerned about file size... what if I converted to MPEG2 format... will the resulting file be smaller in size than an MPEG1 coming from MPEG4? Given the way you explained it, this should make sense.
Thanks for the reply(s). -
sorry for the confusion, Mpeg 4 makes smallest files, Mpeg 2 makes bigger files than mpeg 1 Mpeg 2 or SVCD are better quality than VCD. I only do SVCD's, I have bought some 90 minute CDR's and can put roughly 50 minutes per disk. I think this is the best method.

You mean 80min/700MB CDRs right? My only intent is to have this AVI (DIVX) file backed up on a CD, I don't care if it isn't in a VCD/SVCD playable format... AVI is fine, as long as it fits on there.. I burned it on an 700MB CDR (file being 691MB) using Nero5.5 and closed the CD... my DVDROM or CDRW drives can't seem to read the CDR afterward. I tried it in a regular 24X CDROM and it didn't read it there either. Sorry for all the questions coming from different directions... but is there something I'm doing wrong going from AVI onto a CDR? I just tried to burn it as a data AVI file onto the CDR.
Thx. -
This is a good question, I have burned several DIVX, with Adaptec's Easy CD creator, as a data file. When I look at the CD, It has only one file, which is the DIVX file .avi. Then I open that with media player or something and it plays fine. I would suggest trying another burning application, or try to cut the file down in half just to see if for some reason the cd is running out of space before it finalizes. Other than this, I don't have any idea what the problem is. Good Luck, What applications are you using to encode and to burn?

That was the other thing I meant to ask... what's the easiest way to split a video file such as AVI or MPEG into 2? I am not good with Adobe Premiere yet...
I will try burning it onto a 700MB/80min CDR on my brother's 2X Acer burner... cause he has Easy CD Creator on his machine. I use only Nero because Easy CD Creator 5 had problems with WIN2k. Thanks for the tip... will let you know how it goes... -
goto the tools section on this site and try some of those tools. avi chop, peck power cut, or virtual dub
