  1. Hello all,

A buddy of mine asked me if there are any MB's on the market that provide both AGP and PCI-E support?

Reason: He wants to upgrade to a AMD X2 however all the MB's he see's are all PCI-E and he doesnt want to invest in a new video card right away but wants the option to upgrade to it later.

I dont believe there are any but I thought I would ask here.

    What say you all?

  2. Yes, they are out there. I have a new ECS915P in the box, I would be willing to sell it for a reasonable price. It has PCIE and AGP PRo.

Here are the caveats with this:

    - The ULi chipset is the new VIA chipset in the problems it creates with compatability. I would never touch this device with my own hands. Ever.

    - Considering the power of the highest-end AGP video card an affordable version of a PCI-E card can be had. When PCI-E first emerged this may not have been true but it really is the case now. I can't see getting a new motherboard and not spending $50 on a mid-grade video card as part of the upgrade process. Not unless the motherboard is a throw-away.

Tell your friend to get a good nVidia chipset board for his AMD X2 and to get an affordable PCI-E video card for the time being. It's better to replace the video card later than it would be the motherboard.

Just my opinion, but I would consider getting a Micro-ATX motherboard with on-board video. Then if you want to upgrade the graphics card in the future, easy enough to add a PCI-E video card.

You could look into the Gigabyte AM2 motherboards. Here's one Micro-ATX MB that can also use the newest AM2+ CPUs and has a very good graphics output, better than many older AGP cards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128090

Just a suggestion, but this would somewhat 'future proof' the MB purchase. You could purchase a Phenom quad core CPU with it or use a AM2 X2 for now and upgrade it at a later date.
