How many 4.7 Gig DVDs may fit into 500 gig HDD?

I have over 200 DVDs (4.7 gigs) that I dont have time to convert to divx.

How many 4.7 Gig DVDs may fit into 500 gig HDD?

Round up. Change 4.7 to 5. Then divide 500 by 5.

That'll add a tiny margin, sure. If you're worried about running into the limit, remove at least one or two discs (5-10GB, in this case), and keep that as free space, just to be safe. It's probably better to not fill the drive to the limit, anyway.

rt click the drive and select 'properties see the actual size (in bytes), do the same for the file, and you have your more exact math.

I'm guessing that 500GB drive will show up on the computer as about a 470GB or so. Easy to divide that by the 4.7GB DVD size and that would give you about 100 DVDs. Actually burned DVD-5 DVDs are about 4.37GB maximum. And some may be smaller. So I would estimate 100 to 120 DVDs would fit.

The confusion in the actual size of a hard drive is the way it's measured. One gigabyte is actually 1024 MB, not 1000MB or 1GB. DVDs have the same problem. 4.37GB is a more correct number for burned DVD-5s as it uses the proper 1024MB sizes.

In short: The capacity of a "500 GB" HDD and a "4.7 GB" DVD is calculated in the same f*cked up, marketing department way, so it's safe to say that you'll be able to fit 500/4.7=106.38 DVDs on the HDD.

And what are the odds that every DVD is completely full? So this is all guesstimates anyway. Not to mention that the HDD will become full way too fast and you will end up finding the time to perform the conversions for storage anyway. : )
