  1. Kayembee - Does the mencoder trick work for VFR .mkv's?

The only 99.99% sure way (for me at least) for all VFR files is to use avisynth DirectShowSource("Path\file",fps="x",convertfps=tr ue), where "x" is the true fps. MeGUI's audio (based on BeHappy) uses avisynth for audio and this syncs everything up when you use the same script for audio & video. Basically if you can playback in sync, it will work. No need to strech or shrink audio/video

Dunno, and I have no VFR mkvs to try it on. I'd say give it a whirl, use a VFR mkv
instead of a wmv as input, and tell us what happens.

As for using AviSynth with a specified frame rate based on the actual frame rate
(max or average), it doesn't work for me on these VFR wmvs. I get both
audio desynchronization and intermittent video smearing when I've tried.

  3. I guess I haven't encountered the specific .wmv's that you have. If you guys have any samples I'd love to check it out. I can tell you that the avisynth method has worked on VFR VC-1 .wmv videos for me.

Sorry for posting to an old thread

This small tool also should be able to extract the audio stream from a WMV file:

(including sourround sound support and VFR sync correction)
